3. Discussion Programming
2019 Programming
Sam told the group that the ComEd event in September went well and that 14
people attended. He explained that the national debate likely hindered the
attendance but regardless, the information discussed was very informative. Due
to the success, Sam said that a ComEd Seminar focusing on businesses will be
done in the future.
A program on cyber security- (Avi/Sam) SCHEDULED October 24, 2019 from 7 to 9 p.m
in Training room of Police Station (have signups)
Sam stated that the event is being advertised in the Skokie News as well as at the
past 2 events. Alex explained that the event is now on the Skokie programs and
events calendar. Nick told the group that it will be out on the front page of
Skokie.org as the event draws closer. Avi explained that the final aspects of the
presentation are being completed and that the event is ready.
2020 Programming
A ComEd utility program as to what is available for Business (Scott/Ninos)
Sam passed out fliers from ComEd on their projections for the business event. Nick
explained that he spoke to Howard Meyer of the Skokie Chamber of Commerce
who told him that all the group needs in order to host an event with the Chamber
is to send Nick the event title and bullet points of what is going to be discussed at
the event. Nick will then forward the information to Howard. Sam stated that he
would like Sergio, a consultant for ComEd, to speak at the business seminar. Fran
agreed and stated that he is very friendly and engaging with the crowd. Scott
volunteered to lead the event. Nick asked him to create a title/bullet points to
which he agreed. Nick will send the information to the Chamber once he
receives it so that they can determine the best dates.
Village Science Fair Award Program (Jimmy/Sam)
Sam told the group that it is usually the second week of March and that it works best
when an even number of judges are present. Fran reminded the group that they
must notify the Mayor once the date is determined. Sam explained that he would like
to keep a similar format for the award for at least the first 5 years until anything is
switched. Avi brought up the idea of providing the award without their name on it at
the Science Fair for photo opportunities and then having the recipient come to the
board meeting to receive the award with their name on it and recognition from the
board.
a program on automation and its impacts (Scott/James)
Scott explained that he has made multiple phone calls regarding the event but has
not heard anything. He stated that he will hopefully have something by next meeting.
He also explained that it is more difficult than planned and if he has not heard from
anyone by the second week in October he will reach out to Avi for additional
contacts.
Tracking technologies for patients with Alzheimers and other medical conditions , and
a program on elder care work with the Public Safety Commission and the Health
Department (Ninos and Avi)
Avi explained he has had little time to work on it. Nick told the group that he has the
contact person. Sam shared the progress of his own medical technology which
tracks his blood sugar and used the example to explain how the idea is applicable.
Ninos could have his company bring their outreach programming. (Ninos/Sam)
Sam explained that Ninos is still working with Accenture on the program. He, Nick,
and Ninos will be meeting September 30 to discuss the TED talk and will discuss the
outreach program as well.
A program on cyber security- (Avi/Sam)
Sam told the group that the event will work similar to the ComEd for businesses event
in that he will need a title and bullet points on what the event is about so that it can
be sent to the Chamber.
Drone Technology
Nick explained that he is the liaison for the Public Arts Advisory Committee and that it
is this committee that STAT will work with for putting drone artwork on the app,
Otocast. He also said that George Sellas, Building and Property Standards Inspector
and licensed drone operator for the Village of Skokie, will assist in this. Fran told the
group that Jon Marquedt from the Skokie Park District would be a good contact for
having a drone race and excellent resource on the parks that could be used. Nick
explained that the Fine Arts Commission is different from the Public Art Advisory
Committee. The Fine Arts Commission does grants for schools for art programs, the
SOAR program, the Skokie Award for Artistic Excellence, and Skokie Through the Lens.
Sam said he will talk to Jimmy about leading the event.
February CUB Saver Event (Sam/Staff)
Sam detailed some of the expectations that he wants to lay out in the press release.
He would like to state that attendees should bring their bills and print out any
electronic materials.
CUB event with Brian McDanial (Fran/Sam)
Fran explained that she and Sam need to talk about what STAT wants on their end.
She also explained that Brian knows a lot about the legislature and the new
upcoming technologies. She also mentioned that he is only available in the summer.
AARP Tablet Training (Fran/Christopher)
Fran told the group that she is waiting to hear from AARP and that the last event was
widely successful. She stated that once she hears from them, she and Christopher will
need to sit down and discuss the event.
What Does 5G Mean to Me (AVI/___)
Avi explained that the technology standards for 5G have not been finalized yet. Nick
stated his worries that if the commission has an event before the standards have
been finalized; it will be open to a variety of public criticism. Avi stated there is no
need to discuss it until the standards have been finalized.
4th of July Parade
Sam told the group that the parade will come to fruition once sign up opens. Sam
stated that he has developed book marks with STAT information on them which will
be handed out at the parade. Avi explained that NFC tags could be added to the
handout if the price allows.
4. Possible TED Talk in future T= Technology (STAT) E=Education (School District) D=Design
(Other Commission) Sponsors, Rules at TED website. Starting to create a sub-commission.
Ninos to lead.
Sam explained that he will have more information regarding the TED Talk at the next
meeting after he meets with Nick and Ninos.
5. New business
Building upon the new business idea from Christopher Whitaker at the August 27
meeting regarding expunged records of marijuana, Sam told the group his idea of
setting up a STAT sponsored computer at a future Skokie cannabis dispensary that
allows users to look up their expunged records. Christopher explained that in Cook
County they will be using technology to expunge all the records electronically.
Christopher told the group that the current issue is communicating these
expungements to the people. He also stated another issue with communicating is
that the system being used only has the address of when the person was given the
citation and has not been updated. Christopher proposed an awareness event that
lets attendees know if their records have been expunged. Fran informed the group
that they might want to work with Skokie Police.
Avi told the group that there is a HAM radio event in Lincolnwood that would be
good for STAT members to attend and promote to the community. He also stated
that the Mayor is present at this event. Avi explained his idea of working with the
HAM radio community in Skokie and the Skokie Police in the event of a
communications failure.
Christopher brought up the 2020 census and how the URL to take the census won’t
be released till Census Day, April 1st. He stated how it may be useful to have an event
on how to fill out the census. Nick explained that Planning Supervisor, Steve Marciani,
is leading the census effort for the Village and that he may be a valuable asset to
work with. He also stated that the Village has used kiosks in the past for Village
stickers and that they could be used for residents to fill out the census. Avi told the
group that a program could be developed to reach out to those who are immobile
and without access to a computer and bring an I-pad to their home so that they
could fill it out electronically. Christopher explained that if the census is not filled out
online, census members will begin going to those homes in May.
6. Next Meeting October 29, 2019
7. Adjourn
The motion to adjourn was made by Scott at 8:38 and was seconded by Christopher.
All approved.
