Skokie Telecommunications and Technology (STAT) Commission Meeting Minutes Date: Tuesday February 25, 2020 Time: 7 p.m. Location: Skokie Village Hall Conference Room E Attendees: Sam Corcione, Fran Roehm, Alex Franz, Nick Wyatt, Avi Nutkis, Christopher Whitaker, Scott Shamberg, Ken Grossman, James Paik, Ninos Youkhana and Chris Oh. Absent Randall Cling and Jimmy Gonzalez. 1. Welcome & Introductions Meeting begins at 7 p.m. Everyone introduced themselves to new commission member Chris Oh and guest speaker and Village Planning Supervisor, Steve Marciani. 2. Approval and discussion of the January 28, 2020 Meeting Minutes. Motion from Scott and seconded by Christopher. All approved. Alex will add Randall Cling as absent in the January minutes. 3. Discussion Programming  Welcoming Steve Marciani to present and update us on information for the upcoming CENSUS, and our participation therein: Steve gave an overview of the 2020 Census and the role the Village will play in ensuring that everyone in Skokie completes it. Steve explained that the new use of technology for submitting the Census is the greatest challenge that Census workers are facing. He also explained that anyone can assist someone in filling out the Census as long as they are not making any assumptions for that person and are inputting data as directly stated by that person. Steve told the group that the best thing they can do to help is to talk to their friends and neighbors about filling out the Census. Additionally, he informed the group that if they would like to volunteer in the future or obtain Skokie Census signs they should email him.  Census Event Christopher is working with Ninos to find a time for testing the Census program. He explained if people have issues logging into the system they can call the census number. He also informed the group that if they see any negative postings about the census they can email rumors@census.gov and it will get taken down. Nick told the group that if Steve needs help, he will let everyone know. Sam asked Ninos and Christopher to create a FAQ sheet on the census if the group is called to help.  Village Science Fair Award Program Sam told the group to meet in the back-reception hall of Niles North High School at 9:00 A.M. and that he will need an even number of volunteers as judges. Alex and Nick will create a new certificate for the event.  A ComEd utility program as to what is available for Business (Scott/Ninos) Scott explained that all that is left is to promote the event. Alex will add the event to the special events calendar on the website and will work to get it in the E-news for the business community.  CUB Event with Brian McDanial Fran explained that Brian is busy with Nicor but is excited to work with the group again. The group did not have any additional topic ideas to give to Brian.  A program on automation and its impacts (Scott/James) Sam explained that going to Amazon is not in violation of preferring a vendor because they are currently the only Skokie business who can demonstrate the concept. Ninos informed the group that Amazon is already giving tours. Nick said he will reach out to the manager of Amazon about having the commission take a tour or the possibility of a community tour sponsored by STAT. Avi said he will reach out to his contacts in the automation industry to see if they will present for free.  HOME MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY with the Public Safety Commission and the Health Department (Ninos and Avi) The group will revisit this topic at next month’s meeting.  A program on cyber security- (Avi/Sam) Avi has spoken with Officer Swabak and was informed that Mondays work best. The group agreed that Monday, May 4 at the police station is the best date for the event. The Consumer Affairs Commission has asked to assist in the program.  Drone Technology The group will revisit this topic at next month’s meeting.  AARP Tablet Training (Fran/Christopher) Scott explained that he will have the information by next month’s meeting.  4th of July Parade Sam said he will stop by Village Hall shortly to complete the application. 4. Internal Programming and projects:  Ninos could have his company bring their outreach programming. Ninos told the group that Accenture will be partnering with STAT and Oakton Community College to create an apprenticeship program. Nick encouraged the group to create a press release on the event after it is complete on the success of the program and the role of STAT in implementing it.  Assembling a program package to standardize programming The group will revisit this topic at next month’s meeting.  Creating a cloud-based storage system and retrieval system for documents The group will revisit this topic at next month’s meeting.  Editing Web Page (Sam/Alex) Alex and Sam still need to discuss.  Redo Survey Alex and Sam will work together to reinvent the survey and collect prior results.  Introduce more video into programs to make promotional spots The group will revisit this topic at next month’s meeting. 5. Possible TED Talk in future T= Technology (STAT) E=Education (School District) D=Design (Other Commission) Sponsors, Rules at TED website. Starting to create a sub-commission. Ninos to lead. Nick explained that he has had a conversation with Andrea and that the next step is for someone to get the TED license. 6. New business None 7. Next meeting March 31, 2020 in Conference Room D 8. Welcome & Introductions New Commissioner Christopher Oh 2. Approval and discussion of the January 28, 2020 Meeting Minutes. 3. Discussion Programming  Welcoming Steve Marciani to present and update us on information for the upcoming CENSUS Event, and our participation therein:  Census Event (Christopher/Ninos) . From Christopher “The Census is going to be doing a demo on the Internet Self Response Survey on November 8th. This will give us and any Complete Count Committee to get a sense of how the ISR system will work. I’m still pushing to get an actual hand-on ‘kick the tires’ moment with the ISR system - but at least this will give us perspective on how it’s supposed to work”. Work with Steve Marciani and Vicky Varga  Village Science Fair Award Program (Jimmy/Sam) This will happen on March 7, 2020, MEET IN THE BACK RECEPTION HALL at 9:00 AM we will need 4 or 6 volunteers to judge, criteria is that it must have a technically controlled element, and it must be a resident of Skokie, or attend a Skokie school. Mayor on board for award presentation. We have reached out to them, and they have reached out to us, but not engagingly W  A ComEd utility program as to what is available for Business (Scott/Ninos) the chamber approved the ComEd program for businesses. We just need to reach out to our contact to determine what month/date would work for them. They meet the third Friday morning of each month From Howard “Yes, I got permission from the Program Committee to proceed with the program as a part of our Network Now Initiative. It meets on the third Friday morning of each month. Please reach out to your rep and let me know which month would be best for them. This will showcase the program to members of Skokie, Lincolnwood and Morton Grove Chambers” Neal Latham (ComEd Energy Efficiency Program Manager) will be the individual representing ComEd for the upcoming speaking opportunity that will be taking place on May 15th (7:30am-9:00am). At Skokie Holiday Inn  CUB event with Brian McDanial (Fran/Sam) Fran noted that she had spoken to Brian and that he is available to come summer 2020. Sam volunteered to help Fran on the organization of the event but wants to first narrow it down before a date is set. Fran and same to schedule meeting with Brian. This is closer to scheduling in July, No 1st or 3rd Monday to take place in the Board Room, and recorded till 9:00 PM here are the possible topics of conversation: o The New CUB Solar guide o The HEAT Act o Cable and Internet Bills o Land Lines o Lack of choices and the expenses of broad band o Small Cell Bill  a program on automation and its impacts (Scott/James) Scott explained that this event should be pushed back to 2020. Avi told the group that the new Amazon warehouse in Skokie would be a good contact as they widely use automation and offer warehouse tours. Sam said that these tours could be a possible STAT field trip. Avi explained that he has contacts at Best Buy if Scott needs them. We are further looking into this.. It has been discussed that going to Amazon IS NOT a violation of preferring a vendor, as at this time no other known business in Skokie can demonstrate this concept, it is currently one of a kind.  HOME MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY with the Public Safety Commission and the Health Department (Ninos and Avi) Avi has not had the chance to speak with Ninos however he explained that Google and Apple are soon to be announcing more compatibility with health departments. Nick has reached out to the health Department and they are interested. Focus Summer 2020  A program on cyber security- (Avi/Sam) Avi presented two need business ideas to the group. The first was that if the cyber security event goes well, he wants to it again or possibly twice in the upcoming year. The second was to have a cyber security event that is targeted towards small and medium businesses. He said that the Chamber of Commerce is interested and Fran noted that it might be something to have at Breakfast and Learn Awaiting Avi to create bullet point sheet pending 2019 event We need to work with the Chamber of Commerce on getting this down on their calendar.  Drone Technology (Fine Arts, Public Arts, and a Drone Race) (___/___). Jimmy brought up the idea of partnering with the Fine Arts Commission to have a category in their Skokie Through the Lens event be photos submitted by drone cameras. In order to be eligible, coordinates of where the photo was taken would need to be presented and the photo must be of Skokie. Nick explained that Skokie Through the Lens is early in the year and brought to the groups attention that drones could be used to video art in the community and can then be posted on the Skokie Fine Arts App. Jimmy offered to lead the idea  AARP Tablet Training (Fran/Christopher) Fran explained that she had called the AARP national office multiple times and that to have the event a venue and trainer are needed. Christopher volunteered to help Fran on the event. Sam noted that the AARP was great because they recognize their demographics and target their marketing and information accordingly. Avi proposed doing this around the holiday season when users are generally purchasing or receiving tablets Scott to stop by office Soon  4th of July Parade (needs 6 people walking handing out literature, one car, second one $50.00 4. Internal Programming and projects:  Ninos could have his company bring their outreach programming. –(Ninos/Sam) Ninos has had conversations with Accenture about this and they are planning on an event at OCC, to find Apprentice Candidates  Assembling a program package to standardize programming Sam will start this project and Avi will work with Sam on it for form set up, but could us an organized person for “spitballing”  Creating a cloud based storage and retrieval system for documents. It is in fact important regarding FOIA Which is no different than now.  Editing Web page (Sam/Alex)  Redo Survey  Introduce more video into programs to make promotional spots. 5. TED TALK , Rules at TED website. (Ninos/Scott/Christopher/Sam/Nick). We have gotten the chance to gather as a sub-commission. The sub-commission is compromised of Scott, Christopher, Sam, and Ninos. We are ramping up now that the holidays have passed NICK AND ANDREA HAVE HAD A CONVERSATION AND THE FEASIBILITY INCREASED 6. New business 7. Next Meeting March 31, 2020 8. Adjourn
