Village Seal Committee June 26, 2023 Meeting Minutes In attendance: Dick Witry, Patrick Deignan, Alex Franz, Maria Monastero Bueno, Amanda Sabri, Trustee Khem Khoeun, Emily England, Michaela Marchi, Sheila Crumrine, Thom DaMario, Jasmine Gurneau Absent: Karen Lise Sherman, Joe Hibdon Review of minutes: Minutes approved. Review of draft community survey: The group provided a number of suggested edits to the draft community survey, including adding more context up front regarding the reasons for the Village seal initiative and process. Sheila provided a written paragraph to incorporate into the survey introduction, which the group approved. The group agreed to make the survey open to anyone, but to include an optional checkbox question asking the responder to indicate whether they lived, worked, visited or studied in Skokie. Alex and Patrick took the groups suggestions and agreed to prepare an updated draft survey to share with the committee ahead of the next meeting. Review of fact sheet: The group reviewed draft text for a one-page handout, which will be used to aid in- person engagement and education as the seal design process moves forward. The group provided a number of text edits. Patrick took the suggestions and agreed to prepare a formatted draft to share with the committee at the next meeting. The group also suggested running the fact sheet by an individual with no previous knowledge of the issue to gauge their understanding. Public Engagement/Education: Michaela suggested partnering with the Library to host a film screening or public forum. The group discussed the possibility of having a presence at the Farmers’ Market and/or Wednesdays on the Green concert to share the survey and information. Patrick agreed to check on possible dates and get back to the group at the next meeting. Artist selection: With an ambitious deadline of adopting a new Village seal by December, the group discussed the timeline for an artist RFQ. The group discussed the importance of getting the RFQ to local artists and others who may be a good fit for the project. The group also suggested noting in the RFQ that the Village would be conducting a community survey, and that feedback would be shared with the selected artist(s). Patrick agreed to draft an RFQ with the Finance Department and share it with the committee to discuss at their next meeting.
