Review Minutes from October 4, 2024 meeting
• Minutes approved.
Review Public Input
• The group reviewed feedback received through the community survey, Village Board meeting,
Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative (CAICC) and social media
• Patrick shared a summary of survey results, which included more than 300 responses
o There was a broad range of responses, both positive and negative
o More than 75 percent of respondents felt that they understood why the current seal
was being replaced
o The Village’s explanation of design elements, including written summary and video, was
seen as helpful
o Positive feedback included compliments on the design itself; the symbolism of the
elements included; as well as the committee’s efforts to reflect Skokie’s Native history
o Top concerns about the design included the use of “Wabskoke,” with some feeling that
the word could be misinterpreted or could convey a negative connotation related to
“swamp”; the design of the flame element; the color palette; and the top heaviness of
the words included in the border
• Marne shared that the design was presented to the Chicago American Indian Community
Collaborative, and that it was well received by the organization’s leadership
Review updated design options based on input
• Mary presented several design options for committee consideration that incorporated a more
flame-like color palette, as well as different options for text to include in the border
• Following Marne’s consultation with a Potawatomi language expert, the group determined that
“Wabskoki” is a more accepted and preferred spelling
• The committee discussed removing “1888” from the top portion of the border so that “Village of
Skokie” would be centered at the top
• The committee agreed to keep “Wabskoki” within the bottom border, but determined that
additional education and communication would be needed
• The committee decided to explore additional font options in place of Futura
• Mary suggested further updating the colors by pulling in the blue from Joe Folise’s stained glass
piece, and changing the border font to white

Determine potential dates to present final design to Village Board
• It was determined that December 2 or 16 could be potential dates to present an updated design
to the Village Board if a final design was agreed upon
