Village Seal Committee December 18, 2024 Meeting Minutes In attendance: Maria Monastero Bueno, Sheila Crumrine, Thom DaMario, Emily England, Joe Hibdon, Dick Witry, Patrick Deignan, Alex Franz, Amanda Sabri Not in attendance: Jasmine Gurneau, Trustee Khem Khoeun Review Minutes from November 8, 2024 meeting • Minutes approved. Review Community Input • The group continued discussion of feedback received through the community survey. Sheila and Emily shared data and insights from their line-by-line review of survey results, and Patrick summarized survey response themes, including concerns regarding the use of “Wabskoki,” as well as input on the flame element, colors, and text/font. • Dick and Sheila emphasized the importance of considering all constructive feedback received from the community to arrive at the best possible final design • Joe commented that even in instances where input or ideas can’t be incorporated into the final design, the input could present important opportunities for public education • Maria shared comments from additional discussions related to the seal on social media Discuss Design Updates • The group agreed to remove “Wabskoki” from the design due to its potential for causing confusion with non-English speakers, while agreeing that there may be other opportunities/avenues to educate the community on Native history and language. • “1888” was also removed from the design. Its previous placement caused “Village of Skokie” to not be centered at the top, and the group felt it was not essential to include in the seal. • A red/orange color scheme for the flame was selected. The group also expressed interest in widening the base of the flame to make it more clearly identifiable as fire. • The border and font color were discussed. Thom expressed a slight preference for the blue primary color border, while Amanda suggested that a softer color palette might elevate the design. A greenish/blue border with black typeface was selected. • The group expressed interest in adding a Native applique border – potentially an Oak Leaf pattern – to the design, so long as it was not problematic when used at small scale. • Minion and Antique Olive were selected as preferred fonts, with the group asking to see designs with both fonts at the next meeting. • The words “Community,” “Diversity” and “Vision” were selected to display in the bottom portion of the border, as these were among the most frequently used words used by community members when responding to the 2023 Village Seal community survey. Alex suggested that the group consider whether these words would continue to represent Skokie 100 years in the future, while expressing optimism that they would. #623806 Next Meeting Date • The group set Friday, January 24, at 8:30 a.m. as the next meeting date.
