Minutes - Wheaton Bicycle Advisory Commission
Wheaton City Hall, 2nd Floor Conference Room, 303 W. Wesley Street, Wheaton, IL 60187
Wednesday April 18th, 2018
Roll Call: Chair, Dan Dlhy, called the meeting to order at 7:05pm
In Attendance: Dan Dlhy, Rita Nathanson, Carrie Provost, Therese Kushman, Laurel Salvador and Susan
Lambe (public)
Approval of Minutes: The minutes were approved by Carrie Provost and seconded by Laurel Salvador
Public Comment: Susan Lambe, a long-time Wheaton resident voiced her concern over the lack of
sidewalks in parts of Wheaton (North side). Susan walks in her neighborhood but reported that there
are parts that don’t have any sidewalks and she prefers not to walk in the streets. Susan also wanted to
see some bike education for younger riders to announce when they are passing so there isn’t an
accident.
Chair Report: Reported that the city of Wheaton explained that since Therese Kushman’s address is out
of the district that she cannot have a voting right within the commission. Will discuss with Nancy
Allured to see if there is anything that we can do in order to get Therese to have a voting right within the
commission since she is a vital part of our group.
Ongoing Business:
Taste of Wheaton – Bike Valet (June 2nd): Michelle Dunlap, emailed out an update on the Bike Valet
since she wasn’t in attendance.
Bike / Walk to School – Spring (May 9th): Therese Kushman reported that a reminder about the event
had been sent to all of the PTA Presidents. The Proclamation of the Bike / Walk to School event had
been provided by the city and presented to the commission.
Bike Festival (August 11th): Nancy Allured shared a Google document with the group about the planned
Bike Route as she wasn’t in attendance. There is some concern about the route of the cyclists for the
Bike Festival due to the construction on Front Street.
Discussion of Phase 2 of proposed downtown bike lanes: Dan Dlhy reported that the city council voted
not to adopt the plan to include bike lanes leading into the downtown area due to the amount of vehicle
parking that would be lost. But the city council did vote to add more bicycle parking in the downtown
area. This new parking would accommodate up to approximately 65 more bikes than what is currently
offered today.
Active Trans – Bike Walk West – Mini Grant: Laurel Salvador reported that Wheaton did not receive
the money from this Grant.
WPD – Fun Run in Color: Michelle Dunlap reported via email that due to the weather conditions we
cancelled the table for the event. The commission also discussed the possibility of getting promotional
materials at the 2019 Fun Run in Color packet pick up day.
City Council Meeting – Proclamation: Dan Dlhy reported that Carrie Provost, Michelle Dunlap and
himself attended the city council meeting to receive the proclamation. Photos were taken with Mayor
Gresk presenting us with the proclamation and a few words were said to the city council about our
commission.
Wheaton Public Library Display (Bike Month): Rita Nathanson reported that she will speak with the
library staff to see if they are able to get a display up for our commission promoting May as National
Bike Month. The commission discussed items that we could get on display at the library for our end-cap.
New Business:
Group Ride Reminder: Carrie Provost reminded the group about our first ride of the year to St James
Farm.
