V. Ongoing Business
A. National Bike to School Day - Wednesday, May 5 - Michelle Dunlap will work with Therese
Kaufman and Dan Nielson to alert schools about the day and projects that could be incorporated
B. Safe Routes to School - Bill Nieman discussed a request in the community from a mother
wanting safer biking for the children to the Wheaton schools. Bill will continue investigating this
idea further with agreement from the Commission members.
C. History Ride 2021 - Michelle Dunlap will pursue a plan to develop the next History Ride with the
Historic Commission with the goal to present a bike tour of mid-century modern homes in
Wheaton. In addition, she will encourage the City communications department to promote the
Underground Railroad bike tour again this spring as the biking weather improves to get more
use of last years’ self-guided tour.
D. Bike Friendly Community - Bob van Valzah and Laurel Salvador presented information on
developing an official Bike Friendly Community. They presented the overview of the criteria, the
process and how we should further investigate this option for the City of Wheaton. Their
research included evaluating the criteria from the League of American Bicyclists and the Illinois
cities that have qualified as Bike Friendly Communities, including Warrenville and Batavia.
Commission members agreed this is an important long term goal to pursue and investigate
further. Laurel and Bob will spend more time with the lengthy application and propose next
steps.
