WHEATON HOUSING COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES REGULAR MEETING March 9th, 2017 The regular meeting of the Wheaton Housing Commission was held in the Gamon Room, Wheaton City Hall, at 303 W. Wesley Street, Wheaton, Illinois. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017 by Housing Commission Chair, Tom Hudock. Present: Absent: Thomas Hudock Chris Ellerman Jeannie Iseman Andrea Petti Stuart Johnson Jan Kay Bob Barger Mike Rybinski William Gilbertson Joe Kreidl - City of Wheaton Special Guests: Steve Limp – Steve is a banker with MB Financial and is interested in joining the Housing Commission. Public Comment: None. Approval of Minutes: Commissioner Barger noted a correction to the minutes with the addition of Commisioner Ellerman to be added as absent. Commissioner Rybinski moved and Commissioner Gilbertson seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the February 9, 2016 meeting as corrected. Motion carried unanimously. Communications: ● 2017/2018 Wheaton Housing Assistance Applications ● Wheaton Housing Commission February 2017 minutes Old Business: ● Commissioner Barger investigated the potential to distribute our Housing Assistance Program information through CHAD, however, their clients are primarily low income single mothers. ● Commissioner Barger reported that the DuPage Senior Citizens Council did distribute the Housing Assistance Program flyers to all their meals on wheels clients and by error included Marion Park residents which are not eligible for the program. 1 New Business: ● Commissioner Kay reminded everyone that the City budget hearings related to our Commission is on April 13th. ● Commissioner Hudock commented that in the proposed budget for 2017/2018, the Senior Housing Assistance program was forecasted at $139,800 and that he had written to the City Clerk, Mayor and City Manager that the Housing Commission would be very appreciative to have that amount approved for the upcoming year. ● Commissioner Hudock commented that Mrs. Qualkenbush did an excellent job in drafting a year end summary of the Commissions activity to be sent to the City Council, Mayor, and City Manager. The draft was approved by Commissioner Hudock and was to be distributed. ● Commissioner Hudock commented that last year there had been 53 eligible applicants in the Housing Assistance Program and to date we have 49 potential candidates for the upcoming year. ● Commissioner Kay stated that she had arranged for information on the Senior Housing Assistance Program to be aired on the City Cable Channel 10. ● Commissioner Kay would like to explore the demographic of the population of people seeking HUD rental assistance and on the current wait list for Dupage County. Commissioner Kay will investigate this issue further and report back to the Commission. ● Commissioner Barger has prepared a short list of Senior Human Services and Resources for the Commissioners to distribute to the Housing Assistance applicants during their visits. Very well done. Thank you Commissioner Barger. ● Commissioner Hudock reminded all the Commissioners to remember and tell their applicants about the Wheaton Fire Department resource for free smoke and CO2 detectors. ● Commissioner Hudock stated that Commissioner Salgia’s term on the Housing Commission had expired. The Commission recognized the contributions made by Commissioner Salgia while on the Commission and thanked him for his service to the City of Wheaton and for the dedication that he displayed while working on the Commission. All the Commissioners wished him and his family all the best for the future. ● Commissioner Hudock reminded all Commissioners that their interview applications must be returned to Mrs. Qualkenbush no later than March 31st. Discussion of Next Meeting Agenda: ● Commissioner Ellerman stated that there will be a presentation by the DuPage Federation of Human Services on the increasing demand for low income housing in DuPage County at the April meeting. Adjournment: Commissioner Rybinski motioned to adjourn the meeting at 7:40 p.m. and Commissioner Johnson seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. 2
