Community Relations Commission Meeting Wednesday, April 7, 2021 7:00 – 8:30 pm Virtual Meeting I. Call to Order 7:02 pm. II. Welcome everyone. III. Roll Call – Present: Colleen Attwell, Katie Sivak, Erica Nelson, Larniecia Smith, Jennifer Sever, Rachel Bautista, Kay Frederick, Krista Selvey, Laura Peccarelli, Tony Asta, and Saleha Jawaid. IV. Approval of Minutes – Tony made a motion to approve March 2021 minutes. Erica seconded the motion. All members approved the motion. V. Old Business o Committee Updates –  Strategy/Planning Update – Meeting with Chamber of Commerce is being planned.  Women’s History Month Recap – Great reception to activities we partnered on:  Women’s History Month Webpage on COW Website  #WomenofWheaton: Social media campaign  We Are Women Art Exhibit - 8 pieces of art sold  WPL/WLV/WCRC Co-Sponsored Events:  March 11th - Living History - Florence Nightingale (225 attended)  March 25th - Margaret Hamilton: Wheaton’s First Female Mayor (110 people attended)  Good Citizens Awards – Nine applications in so far, expecting many more. April 26 applications close, May 17 event. Nominations will be sent to commission members prior to May 5th meeting for review and selection. Selection process instructions will be sent out prior to that. No in-person reception this year due to COVID. Looking at goodie boxes and yard signs for winners and awards will be delivered. Winners will also be announced at City Council meeting on May 17.  Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month – Discussion about putting out a statement regarding violence against Asian Americans. Rachel also talking to group from Wheaton College about other activities/website.  Festival of Cultures – Date confirmed by Park District for Sept. 12  Make a Difference Day - Larniecia has reached out to several potential sub- committee members and will hold a brainstorming session on 6/18. COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION DRAFT MEETING MINUTES April 7, 2020 VI. New Business – o Military/Veterans - Field of Honor to be put on by Cantigny American Legion at Seven Gables Park from June 30-July4th with flag kits being sold for $25. Erica made a motion for commission to sponsor a flag for $25, Katie seconded. All approved the motion. o DEI – Group of individuals is working to put something on for Juneteenth celebration/recognition on 6/19. Possible speaker and event at park. VII. Adjournment – 8:16 pm. Tony motioned to adjourn, Katie seconded the motion. All members approved the motion. VIII. Next meeting: Wednesday, May 5, 2021. 2
