COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES

Regular Meeting
Wednesday, September 3, 2025
7 PM - 8:30 PM

Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM
Roll Call
In person: Shauna Thorson, Kathy Bushong, Mike Hodel, Andrea Clayton, David
Sohmer
Absent: Andrew McGady
Approval of Minutes
Approval of minutes from August 6, 2025 regular commission meeting — motion to
approve by Shanua and second by Kathy — all in favor unanimous.
i. Old Business
a. Wheaton Block Party event
i. Committee report (Dave, Kathy, Shauna, and Andrew) — Dave reviewed plan:
Music - Michael Hayes; Matt & Jen Band. Food vendors reviewed and certificates
of insurance completed for the City of Wheaton - a few more need to be
completed for the Park District. Food permits are in process. Games & Train will
be present. Prize options: candy, stickers, bouncy balls. Personalized Block
Party stickers were decided on for prizes. Social media promotion ideas for the
block party were shared. Cake walk ideas discussed. Timeline for Block Party
discussed. Emcee timeline and wording discussed. Four face painters and a
balloon artist will be present. Button Making will be happening with the Wheaton
Public Library. Chair and table rentals will happen through the park district.
Shauna will coordinate the balloons. Andrew will buy and supply all of the water.
Multiple state senators and representatives will be present. History talks will
happen. A few City Council members will be present. Marketing: banners, flyers,
programs as well as yard signs. Multiple locations for advertising discussed.
Flyers to be distributed to businesses.
b. Wheaton Gives Back
i. Select program chair — Kathy Bushong
ii. Review key milestone events - Wheaton Gives Back & Stuff a Truck
ii. New Business
a. Selection of WCRC Chair - motion by Andrea to nominate Dave Sohmer for chair;
Mike Hodel second. All in favor - unanimous.
b. Annual Report - introduction — Dave reviewed the annual report form. It will need to be
discussed at the next meeting and turned in October 15th.
