Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, January 27, 2015
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman,
Nancy Flynn, Phil Landrum, Tony Pope, Sterling Price, Piya Salgia, Hanna Self, Tracy Vought, and Bob Young.
Kay McKeen and Joseph Wilmarth Tyna were absent.
Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the November meeting. Tony seconded. The minutes were
approved.
Public Comment: none
Budget Report: Bob reported that we have $3818.61 open to spend.
Other Reports:
1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that the committee met last Wednesday. There are
15 members, and they are preparing for their 2015 events. A Bike Festival will be held August 8 in
conjunction with the Downtown Business Association. Nancy will investigate having light pole
banners downtown for bike month in May.
2. Adopt a Highway: no clean ups scheduled at this time.
3. Recycling Report: fluorescent light bulbs, cooking oil, and holiday lights are still collected the second
Saturday of each month. Monthly electronic recycling remains cancelled until further notice. Bob
reported that Ace is no longer accepting CFLs. Members were wondering what batteries can be
recycled and where.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Cooking Oil Recycling: Bob and Tony will collect cooking oil on February 14.
Unfinished Business:
1. Library Improvements: no information
2. Helen Bartlett Memorial: Bob will check with Kevin Maloney about a location.
3. Green Action Plan: Nancy Allured mailed the plan to Susan Wallace, Paul Redmond, Mike Dzugan,
and the finance director. She will call Mike Dzugan to ask how to proceed with getting the plan
before the city council.
4. Water Bill Insert: Cathy is working on updating this for submittal in mid-February. Cathy moved that
we allocate up to $1500 for the cost of this mailing. Bob seconded. The motion carried.
New Business:
1. Recycling Extravaganza (April 11, 2015): Kay sent a report that Elgin Recycling will handle the scrap
metal and electronics recycling and all items will be shredded. There will be a cost of 18¢ per pound for
transportation of TVs and monitors. Paper shredding, car batteries, and bicycles are set.
2. Rain Barrels will be available at the Native Plant Sale by contacting the Conservation Foundation.
3. Arbor Day (April 24, 2015): Longfellow School
4. Native Plant Sale (April 25, 2015): Hanna reported that they have a meeting February 17.
5. Prairie Path Clean Up (April 25, 2015): Tracy reported that she will check on bags and notify public
works that the bags will need to be picked up.
Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Cathy seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40.
The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for February 24, 2015, at 7:30 P.M.
