Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, May 26, 2015
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:40. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman,
Phil Landrum, Tony Pope, and Bob Young. Also present was Tony Majszak, who will officially become a
member on June 1. Absent were Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, Piya Salgia, Hanna Self, and Joseph Wilmarth Tyna.
Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the April meeting. Phil seconded. The minutes were
approved.
Public Comment: none
Budget Report: Bob reported that we spent $4033.38 of our $4500 budget, leaving $466.62 unspent.
Other Reports:
1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that they are meeting monthly now. Eight Wheaton
schools participated in Bike to School, up from three last year. The free bike valet at Taste of
Wheaton will be open on Saturday from 6:30am to 7:30pm. The bike festival will be held on August
8, and a number of downtown businesses are sponsoring events.
2. Adopt a Highway: Sterling sent a report that the Democratic Party of Milton Township held a clean
up on 5/30 and EIC cleaned on 5/2. Nancy Flynn will be heading up this activity, replacing Sterling.
3. River Sweep: Bob participated in this and he traveled the West Branch of the DuPage River from
downtown Winfield to Mack Road. He collected one bag of trash, one bag of recyclables, several
chairs and bin. Over all he was pleased with the cleanliness of the river and banks.
4. Electronics Recycling: Tony reported that he and Bob worked this event with one student from
WWSHS and four employees of New Life Electronics. 162 cars came through.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Adopt a Highway: no date set yet for the EIC’s next collection.
2. Electronic Recycling: Bob and Tony will be crew chiefs for the June 13th collection.
Unfinished Business:
1. Helen Bartlett Memorial: A tree will be planted in the fall. Bob will follow up on the plaque, so that it
matches the one already there and is ready for the planting.
2. Street lamp banners: At the last meeting we discussed purchasing some of these along with the
concept of branding-using one logo for all our signs and communications. Tony Majszak suggested a
contest in the schools to come up with a logo.
New Business:
1. Election of officers: Elections were held. The officers will remain the same-Ted is chairman, Bob is
treasurer, Cathy is secretary.
2. EIC Annual Report: submitted to the City Clerk, Sharon and distributed to members.
Adjournment: Nancy moved that the meeting be adjourned. Bob seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30. The
next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for June 23, 2015, at 7:30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Coleman
