MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, October 27, 2015 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Hanna Self, Joseph Wilmarth Tyna, and Bob Young. Also present were Mary Jo Malach and Rob Sperl from the Illinois Prairie Path, Kevin Maloney from the City of Wheaton Forestry Department, and Wheaton North Advanced Government students Taylor Gallop, Gabi Davis, Kiersten Oslund, Jenna Orellana, and Ashley Musleh. Absent were Phil Landrum and Tony Pope. Minutes: Joe moved that we accept the minutes of the September meeting. Kay seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that we have spent $408.65, leaving $5091.35 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committe: Nancy Allured reported that the committee met last week and is working on events for 2016. 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy Flynn reported that clean up was included in the city newsletter as an option for Make a Difference Day. Nancy Flynn, Nancy Allured, and Bob collected three bags. The EIC sign has been installed. Pathways Tae Kwon Do did a clean up and collected four bags. Upcoming Projects: 1. Adopt a Highway: No clean up planned till spring. 2. Pumpkin Composting Event (November 7, 2015): Kay reported that 11 towns will be participating with 12 locations. The pumpkins are hauled to Sheridan, IL, for composting. Kay moved that we allot up to $300 for roll-offs and transportation. Cathy seconded. The motion carried. 3. Electronic Recycling: Bob and reported that about 160 cars came in October. Tony Pope's survey showed that most were Wheaton residents. Bob, Joe, and Tony Majszak will be at the event in November. 4. Cooking Oil Recycling (November 28, 2015): Kay reported that there are six sites in DuPage County to collect cooking oil from people who fry turkeys. 5. Recycling Extravaganza (April 16, 2016) 6. Arbor Day (April 29, 2016) 7. Native Plant Sale (April 30, 2016): Hanna reported that the Landscape Diversity Committee met last week, and the price of trees will be higher next year. 8. Illinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 30, 2016) Unfinished Business: 1. Helen Bartlett Memorial: Bob reported that a flowering crabapple has been planted at the foot of the Manchester Bridge between Front and Wesley. Bob is still investigating markers. 2. Street Light Banners Design Contest: tabled till next month 3. Sign investigation at Washington and Prairie Path: Tony Majszak reported that pedestrian crossing signs will be installed as soon as the best way to do this is decided. New Business: 1. Bike Committee Budget: Nancy Allured moved that we budget up to $400 for bike committee materials. Bob seconded. The motion carried. 2. Electronic CRT Recycling Funding: Advanced Disposal picked them up. 3. Permanent Recycling Facility: no information at this time 4. Founders Park Improvements IPP: Mary Jo and Rob shared that the IPP group would like to make Founders Park more inviting and a destination for people using path. Members will visit park and see if they can make more suggestions. Kevin said he will see that the bench is repaired, and Kay has a cigarette urn which was donated to handle immediate problems. Brainstorming of ideas yielded the following suggestions: • more benches in groupings • more colorful plants • sculpture--perhaps using railroad related metal • signage about history and founders Adjournment: Cathy moved that the meeting be adjourned.
