MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, September 27, 2016 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Nancy Allured, Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Christine Richarson, Hanna Self, Allison Torrence, Joseph Wilmarth Tyna, Bob Young. Absent were Arlan Schattke, Cathy Coleman, Tony Majszak Also in attendance were: Kayne Oliver Knippen, College of DuPage student; Keerthy Sudharsan, Sahar Virani, Rahima Jamal, and Allison Klage, Wheaton North HS students; and Wheaton Resident Brittany Graham. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the August meeting. Tony Pope seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that YTD expenditures are $246.68, so there is still $5253.32 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that the Bike Committee is talking with City Council members and staff to encourage continuation of the Wheaton Bike Plan. 2. Electronic Recycling Report: Joe Tyna reported: Saturday Sept 10th had fewer volunteers, no car count but steady flow, collected 246 fluorescent bulbs, and about 10 liters of cooking oil. Moving forward, E Works will have to split their staff between two collection events so we will need to depend on a few more volunteers each month. 3. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported: ●On September 24, Tony and Annette Pope, Allison Torrence, and Nancy and Brent Flynn collected 5 bags of garbage. ● She also is exploring the idea of having boys and girls clubs do cleanup projects in town. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: Kay will be crew chief October 8. Bob asked Arlan and Tony Majszak to cover this event, and they agreed/ 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy Flynn reported that the next EIC clean up may be in November. Unfinished Business: 1. Street Lamp Banners/Feather signs--Design Contest: tabled 2. EIC Mission Statement: Joe offered to provide a draft for the October meeting 3. Library Donations in Appreciation of city staff: Hanna reported that the library has one of the two books on its shelf; the second one will be available in December. New Business: 1. Monarch Butterfly Waystation: Hanna reported that there is a Waystation program active in Wheaton including at Lincoln Marsh, Hope Church, DuPage Convalescent Center and IIT at Rice Lake. 2. Public Garden Plots: Provided by the Wheaton Park District at Atten Park 3. Pumpkin collection: Kay reported that the collection will be November 5, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Christine seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:35. The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2016, at 7:30 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Allured
