Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, January 24, 2017
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Nancy Allured,
Cathy Coleman, Brittany Drummond, Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Hanna Self, Allison Torrence, Joseph
Wilmarth Tyna, and Bob Young. Tony Majszak and Christine Richarson were absent.
Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the November meeting. Tony seconded. The minutes were
approved.
Public Comment: none
Budget Report: Bob reported that our expenses to date totaled $525.26, leaving $4974.74 open to spend.
Other Reports:
1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that the bike map is now available on the city website. The
committee is hoping to sponsor a bike tour with the Historic Commission during their celebration week.
2. Electronic Recycling Report: Tony Pope reported that he, Bob Young, Nancy Flynn, and her husband Brent,
Natalie Pekekh from S.C.A.R.C.E., and 4 employees from E Works manned the January event. 315 vehicles
came through, 232 from Wheaton. 5 gallons of cooking oil and over 400 fluorescent light bulbs were
collected. There is no limit on TVs. People bringing large amounts should make arrangements ahead of
time.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Electronic Recycling (February 11): Joe, Bob, and Brittany will be crew chiefs
2. Paper Shredding (April 8, 9-1) Kay reported that we will have 3 trucks, costing $175 per hour. Presort
stations will be set up to remove plastic folders and rubber bands. This event may possibly include a
mercury collection.
3. Arbor Day (April 28): Kay reported that this year's program will be at Whittier School.
4. Illinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 29): no report
5. Native Plant Sale (April 29): Hanna reported that Annette has sent out emails to volunteers. Shamili will
solicit help from College of DuPage Environmental Club and Horticulture Class.
Unfinished Business:
1. EIC Mission Statement: Brittany presented two versions of a vision and mission statement. Members would
like to see the chosen statements and the list of activities Shamili edited on the city website with a link to
pictures of events.
2. Street Lamp Banners/ Feather Signs/ Design Contest: tabled
New Business:
1. Banner Funding: tabled
2. Sharps Disposal funding: too expensive for us to fund
3. No Idling Sign funding: Kay has some signs for needed locations
4. Environmental Film Fest: Shamili reported that COD will present two films as part of the One Earth Film
Festival on March 7 and 9. COD is sponsoring one, and the Glen Ellyn Environmental Improvement
Commission will sponsor the other. In April they will present two films as part of the Sustainability Film
Festival.
5. Focus on Energy Film Festival: Kay reported that SCARCE received a grant from The Science and Energy
Innovation Foundation to help people who do not speak English as their first language. High school and
college students will create short films in their native language on topics such as energy saving, climate
change, or economic advantages of energy efficient products. These films will be presented at Studio Movie
Grill on Sunday, April 23.
6. Tony reported that Lakeshore Recycling has scheduled two presentations at the Wheaton Public Library on
January 31 and February 7.
7. Tony reported that he attended the city storm water meeting. Residents asked about street sweeping, which
is not done in the winter. They also asked about clearing the storm drains, which they were told the city
does.
Adjournment: Cathy moved that the meeting be adjourned. Tony seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00. The next
regular EIC meeting is scheduled for February 28, 2017, at 7:30 P.M.
