MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, April 25, 2017 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Cathy Coleman, Tony Majszak, Tony Pope, Hanna Self, Allison Torrence, Joseph Wilmarth Tyna, and Bob Young. Dan Dlhy from the bike committee also attended.Absent were Nancy Allured, Brittany Drummond, Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, and Christine Richardson Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the January meeting. Joe seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that our expenditures to date total $877, leaving $4623 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Paper Shredding: This event went well. Ted's pre-planning was greatly appreciated. 35,800 pounds of paper were collected. 2. Foreign Language Film Festival: Shamili reported that a dance group opened the event with an interpretive dance about climate change and global warming. Students from COD and Benedictine University submitted films at the college level. Students from Addison Trail, Glenbard East, and the Islamic Foundation submitted films at the high school level. There was a total of about 10-12 films. 3. Bike Committee Report: Dan reported that the committee does group rides and they are open to the public. ●Saturday, May 20, will be the history ride, with 6 or 7 stops and talks. ●Bike groups from Wheaton, Winfield, and Warrenville are meeting with Cantigny to develop a bike route to Cantigny. ●Wheaton bike route maps have been printed and will be available at bike committee events. ●The Bike Valet at Taste of Wheaton will be held again. ●The bike festival will be sponsored on August 12 by the bike committee and the Downtown Wheaton Association. 4. Electronic Recycling Report: Bob reported that he, Joe, and the Eworks employees handled a steady stream of cars with little back up. 70 fluorescent bulbs and 10 gallons of cooking oil were also collected. 5. Adopt a Highway Report: Joe, Bob, Allison, Nancy Flynn, and Brett Flynn collected on April 15. DuPage County had mowed, and there was not a lot of litter in our area. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: On May 13 Bob and Tony will be crew chiefs. 2. Arbor Day (April 28): Whittier School at 10 am 3. Illinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 29) 4. Native Plant Sale (April 29): Set up Friday, April 28, from 12-3 5. Adopt a Highway (June 17) 6. Bike Festival (August 12) Unfinished Business: 1. Street Lamp Banners/Feather Signs: Tony Majszak presented a tentative plan. He hopes the contest will be ready to go when school starts. 2. Library Books: Hanna sent a list of recommended books to the library, and they will review it and place the orders. They have received our donation. New Business: 1. EIC events funding: none needed 2. Year end report is due soon 3. One Earth Film Festival: Shamili was wondering if we might consider sponsoring a film next year. The cost is $500. 4. SCARCE garden sale is May 6. 5. Green Earth Institute is selling organic seedlings on May 13. Adjournment: Joe moved that the meeting be adjourned. Bob seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20.
