MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, August 22, 2017 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Christine Richardson, and Bob Young. Also attending were Dan Dhly and Andrew Van Gorp. Absent were Nancy Allured, Brittany Drummond, Tony Pope, Hanna Self, and Allison Torrence. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the June meeting. Kay seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: Andrew Van Gorp from Sustain DuPage reported that their group is working on a Starry Skies initiative and hopes to have DuPage be the first county certified by the Dark Skies Association. Budget Report: Bob reported that we have spent $65.20 so far, leaving $21,434.80 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: Dan reported that the history ride has been rescheduled for September 23 from 2-4. He also reported that they have two feather signs and their only stand broke. Kay moved that we spend up to $120 for stands. Bob seconded. The motion carried. 2. Bike Festival Report: Nancy Allured sent a report that the Bike Wheaton Festival was held on August 12th. The turnout was the highest yet. 130 people in the parade, 200 people in the park attending, 50 children did the bike Rodeo with the Wheaton Police department, and 12 organizations/information tables. Working Bikes collected 11 bikes. 3. Electronic Recycling Report: Tony Pope reported that he, Allison, Nancy Flynn and Cathy from EIC, 4 volunteers from the District 200 Adult Education Group, and 3 Eworks employees worked the July 8 event. 302 cars, 228 from Wheaton came through. A large amount of electronics was collected, as well as 10 gallons of cooking oil and 265 fluorescent bulbs. Tony Pope, Bob, and Tony Majszak from EIC, 4 volunteers from District 200 Adult Education Group, Jim Truesdale, and 4 Eworks employees worked the August 12 event. 258 cars from Wheaton and 66 from other communities came through. 251 fluorescent bulbs and approximately 5 gallons of cooking oil were collected. 4. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported that she and her husband Brent, Bob Young, and Tony and Annette Pope collected 5 bags of trash on August 19. That is the fourth EIC clean up this year. If weather permits, another clean up may be scheduled in October or November. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: September 9 crew chiefs are Tony Pope and Tony Majszak. 2. Adopt a Highway: TBD 3. Green Fair (September 30): Kay reported that this event will be held at the DuPage County Fairgrounds from 10-4. Unfinished Business: 1. Street Lamp Banners/Feather Signs-Design Contest: Tony Majszak researched banner costs and they can be purchased for $99. The design contest information will be posted on the city website, in the city newsletter, and at the library, so it is available to all Wheaton students. 2. Library Books: tabled New Business: 1. Smoke Detector recycling refunding: Cathy moved that we spend up to $100 for postage to return smoke detectors. Bob seconded. The motion carried. 2. Environmental Film Sponsorship: The One Earth Film Festival will be in early March, and we are researching sponsorship. We would need a location, and the library, the community center, and Studio Movie Grill were suggested as possibilities. Resiliency was suggested as a possible theme. 3. Pumpkin Composting: Kay reported that this will be held November 4. 4. Paper Shredding: Kay reported that this will be on April 7. 5. Prairie Path Clean Up (April 28) 6. Native Plant Sale (April 28) 7. Medical Supply Lending Closet: Nancy Flynn contacted the Palatine closet for information. Their closet is located in city hall and is staffed two mornings a week by the nurses club. Nancy will research possible locations. Adjournment: Cathy moved that the meeting be adjourned.
