MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, January 23, 2018 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Nancy Allured, Brittany Drummond, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Christine Richardson, and Bob Young. Absent were Tony Majszak, David Popham, and Allison Torrence. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the November meeting. Tony Pope seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that the year to date expenses totaled $280.50, leaving $21,219.50 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that she and Dan attended the city council planning session, where there was discussion about whether the Bike Committee should be a formal EIC sub- committee or an official city commission. 2. Electronic Recycling Report: Tony Pope reported that the January event was very busy, and he and Bob had little help. He was unable to keep a tally, but he felt there were more cars from outside Wheaton. There was a large number of large fluorescent bulbs from commercial properties. Two TVs were dumped illegally. Bob moved and Kay seconded that we set aside up to $250 to cover recycling costs on TVs which are illegally dumped at the site. The motion carried. 3. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported that if there is a period of nice weather, she will email to schedule a clean up. 4. Pumpkin Recycling Report: Kay reported that in the four years the project has been going, 163 tons of pumpkins have been kept out of landfills. This year DuPage County had 71 collection sites. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: Bob and Tony Pope will be crew chiefs in February. 2. Paper Shredding (April 7): 3 trucks, 8-12 3. Electronic Recycling (April 14) 4. Arbor Day (April 27): Franklin Middle School 5. Prairie Path Clean Up (April 28) 6. Native Plant Sale (April 28): set up at 9 am on the 27th, sale will end at 11. 7. Bike Festival (August 11) Unfinished Business: 1. Street Lamp Banner/Feather Signs—Design Contest: no report 2. Environmental Film Sponsorship: Shamili reported that our timeline was too tight to find a location. The plan is to choose a family film from the One Earth Film Festival list, and sponsor it at the library at a later date. 3. Medical Equipment Re-use (Nurse’s Closet): Nancy Flynn is still searching for a location. New Business: 1. Hanna has resigned from the commission, and we thank her for her long and dedicated service. Tony Pope will take on the Native Plant Sale, Bob will work with the library, and Cathy will do social secretary duties. 2. Share Tables: Kay reported that a new law passed allowing schools to provide a table for unused food that students do not plan to eat. Other students are then able to choose items from the table. Kay is meeting with schools to set up these tables to help cut down on food waste. Adjournment: Nancy Allured moved that the meeting be adjourned. Cathy seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50.
