ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES WHEATON CITY HALL, 303 W WESLEY STREET, WHEATON, ILLINOIS 60187 Tuesday, March 26, 2024 7:30 I. Call to Order: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Jim Boak, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Brian Malone, Kay McKeen, David Popham, Stephen Siemer, Seema Wadia, Jim Wozniak, and Bob Young. Absent were Tony Pope and Allison Torrence. II. Approval of Minutes: Bob moved that the minutes from the January meeting be approved. Steve seconded. The minutes were approved by unanimous voice vote. III. Budget Report: Bob reported that expenditures to date equal $1608.50, leaving a $34,141.50 open to spend. IV. Public Comment: None V. Other Reports: 1. Electronic Recycling: Bob reported that the March 9 collection was a steady stream of cars, and the collection went well. Bob, Ted, Allison and her children Willow and Glen, Jim Wozniak, and Jim Truesdale manned the collection with eWorks employees. 40-50 bulbs, 10-15 gallons of oil, and half a dozen smoke detectors were collected. 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy set Saturday, March 30, for EIC's first clean up of the year. Volunteers will meet at Chick.fil.A at 8am. VI. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronics Recycling (April 13): This will be held at the DuPage County Fairgrounds as part of the Recycling Extravaganza. 2. Annual Recycling Extravaganza (Aprill3): Kay reported that the vendors are all set. She and Ted will work on a new traffic pattern to accommodate the electronics, textiles, and scrap metal. Most EIC members indicated they plan to be there. 3. Native Plant Sale (April 27): Kay reported that the plants are all ordered, the committee has one more meeting, Annette hasa numberofvolunteerssigned up, and rain barrelswill be included. 4. lllinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 27): Seema reported that registration is open, and 30 people have already signed up. 5. Arbor Day (April 26): This year's event will be held at Monroe Middle School at 9am. Jason from Forestry has chosen a White Oak and has met with the principal to coordinate. VII. Unfinished Business: 1. Earth Day Proclamation: Ted changed the dates to the current year, and Kay will add Dark Skies. 2. City video on Hazardous Waste: Kay volunteered to assist with this 3. Spring Pollinator Awareness Education: Seema will prepare a PSA 4. Composting Education (Jim W., Kay): International Compost Awareness Week is May 5-12 ENVIRONMENTALIMPROVEMENTCOMMISSION MEETING MINUTES March 26, 2024 5. Dark Skies Week (April 2-8): Steve prepared posters and a power point presentation which will be running in the Wheaton Public Library during Dark Skies Week. Kay will share information on a butb she located that is not as bright. 6. Funding for EIC Events: •Bob moved that we allocate up to $1800 for three shredding trucks. Nancy seconded. The motion carried by unanimous voice vote. •Bob moved that we allocate $500 for rental of the DuPage County Fairgrounds for the Recycling Extravaganza. Jim W. seconded. The motion carried by unanimous voice vote. VIII. Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Kay seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:37.
