Minutes of the City of Wheaton Historic Commission March 20, 2018 Meeting Held at City Hall, Wheaton, Illinois Attendance Present: Nancy Flannery (Chair), Maureen Fogerty, Tom Kay, Steph McGrath (Secretary), Frank Principe, Bob Purdy Absent: Barbara Dutton (Vice Chair), Emelie Engling The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm Approval of Minutes Minutes of the February 20, 2018 meeting were approved on a motion by Bob, seconded by Tom, and passed unanimously. Public Two members of the public attended the meeting, Megan Jorgenson and Andrew Welker, both applicants considering joining the Historic Commission. They introduced themselves and reviewed their interest in the Historic Commission, then stayed to observe the meeting. Old Business DuPage County Historical Society (DCHS) – Nancy reported that the Historic Commission has become a website partner with the DCHS. Our website is now linked with DCHS. Steph suggested that we try to do the same with the DuPage County Genealogical Society. Preservation Month 2018 -Nancy reported that she is still trying to arrange our May meeting to be held at Cantigny. We may need to shift the May meeting to another time if Cantigny requests it. -Wheaton’s Summer of Golf – the Commission is considering renting a trolley for Wheaton’s golf history tours. The Commission discussed options for payment and schedule; past tours; and possible docents. Bob will represent the Historic Commission at the Ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception for the golf exhibit “Wheaton, IL – Golf History Starts Here” exhibit at Arrowhead Golf Club, 26W151 Butterfield Rd, Wheaton, IL 60189. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. -The Commission agreed to change the name of the Wheaton Preservationist Award name slightly. Bob moved to approve Wheaton Preservation Award, Maureen seconded and the change passed unanimously. Miscellaneous -Nancy reported that she is still trying to reach contact at Union Pacific Railroad regarding obtaining installation permission for the historic site marker permission and discussed other possible avenues. -Local landmark for Landmarks’ Illinois Endangered List: the possibility of contacting the Christian Scientist church in Wheaton was discussed; this issue was tabled until the next Commission’s meeting. New Business 1 -Steph informed the Commission that one of the landmarked homes on North Wheaton Ave now has a zoning sign in front and might be in danger of demolition, but city did not notify the Historic Commission as previously agreed. Commissioner Comments: -Nancy shared information from a Landmark’s Illinois masonry workshop and announced an upcoming Sheldon Peck lecture to be held at the DuPage County Historical Museum. -Maureen mentioned some historic homes currently on the market -Tom briefly reviewed his interest in history from local lad to history professor for the benefit of the applicants attending the meeting. -Steph said the owners of Ballyshear would be interested in having an open house during the golf event. Adjournment Maureen moved to adjourn, Tom seconded, the motion passed unanimously, the meeting concluded at 8:17 pm. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. 2
