Tuesday, October 18, 2022
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m.
Present in person: Nancy Flannery (Chair), Joe Szczepaniak (Vice Chair), Stephen Beach,
Lisa Buchanan, Louise Ferrebee
Present virtual: Steph McGrath (Secretary), Emelie Engling
Absent: Bob Purdy, Sophia Ruffolo
Public Comments: Shan Jiang
II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the September 20, 2022 meeting approved on a motion by Lisa, seconded by
Stephen, and passed unanimously.
III. Old Business
A. Revised responsibilities: Adding those of the Vice Chair. Change in Chair in January.
B. Chicago, Aurora and Elgin site marker: City installing next Monday. We will do some
recognition during next year’s Preservation Month. Will ask Bob if he wants to work with
the City on some publicity.
C. Attorney General case: September hearing not held, will be rescheduled in December.
D. Preservation Week signs: Went through suggested new slogans, prefer a shorter one.
Reviewed draft designs. Motion to add a QR code at the bottom with learn more at the
City of Wheaton, moved by Joe, seconded by Louise and passed unanimously. See if sign
company has suggestions on color, City uses blue. Have revised designs to review next
month and will decide on slogan, color and design. Could get new light post banners for
downtown, get specifics from the City. Maybe get some larger banners too.
E. Library files: First batch ready to submit. See if the City can provide storage for materials
that should be kept private, and for back up copies.
F. Publication of Wheaton and its Homes: Need to get cost estimates. Depends on how it is
published. Print on demand suggested. Need to learn cost per item.
G. Budget: Submitted to the City, same as in the past. Next year will use the new format
linked to the annual report. Trying to think ahead of projects that use City staff. For
example more ways to use the Wheaton Historic Register Map, such as thematic tours.
H. Preservation Month 2023: Some event linked to installation of Chicago, Aurora and Elgin
sign, official unveiling, maybe a talk, or a two part talk. Talk could be on site by sign or at
the Wheaton Public Library. Talks at the library can be videotaped and posted online.
Need other speaker ideas.
lV. New Business
A. Wheaton Register of Historic Places application process: Asked for any suggestions. just
want to see the draft first. Lisa sent some suggested research tips. Have been discussing
having a blog or handouts at the library on the research process by topic or record.
B. Facebook page: Anonymous, but created under Louise's account. Was City Wheaton
Historic Commission now Wheaton, lllinois History.
V Commissioner Comments
Emelie: Tom Kafs eulogy talked about the importance of history.
Steph: Found 1930s house photos for someone heing helped with their home history
research, made the contact through a genealogy website.

Joe moved to adjourn, Stephen seconded, the motion passed unanimously; the meeting
concluded at 8:47 p.m.
