Library Information Technology (IT) Presentation – Deputy Director, Dawn Kovacs: Mrs. Kovacs wanted to clarify information about the Library’s Wi-Fi, as there had been complaints about speed and coverage Wheaton Public Library Meeting Minutes of August 17, 2015 recently. She noted that we increased the Internet speed for both Comcast and ICN in July to 100 Mbps. We waited until July because that’s when the eRate funding year begins. She stated that 15% of the usage is streaming of YouTube videos and that streaming takes up most of the bandwidth. She noted that the speed is affected by the usage, so the more people using the wireless, the lower the speed all around. She went on to explain eRate and how the library benefits from it. Our 50% eRate discount allowed us to increase our Internet speed without increasing our monthly cost. We also received a 50% eRate discount on equipment and a 30% eRate discount on telephone service. B. Wheaton Reads Program: The Wheaton Reads book this year is by local author, Cristina Henríquez and is titled The Book of Unknown Americans. Ms. Henriquez will be speaking on September 17th at the library. There will be many activities relating to this program at the library throughout the month of September. C. Wheaton Global [correction: World] Tour: On September 13th from 1-4 p.m. there will be tents, music and activities on the Library’s West Plaza celebrating diversity. The Friends of Wheaton Library will be selling water and there will be a vendor selling slushies. In case of rain, there is a plan for bringing everything inside, including the tents. Mrs. Adamowski noted that the flyer was created by the library’s new graphic designer, Jacklyn Rojas. IX. Board Member Comments (Round the Table): Mrs. Fenne mentioned that the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce hosted a coffee with Congressman Peter Roskam at the library and about 40 people attended.
