Wichita Animal Control Advisory Board Minutes-02/03/2016
Call to Order by Stephanie Fisk Mccurdy at 4pm
Board Members present: Stephanie Fisk McCurdy, Sarah Guengerich, Teresa Burks, John Stevens, Judy
City of Wichita: Cpt. Doug Nolte, Jan Jarman Jennifer Magana, Drew Bessey, Steve Kenney, Robin
Bradley, Tracie Andrews, Rusty Leeds.
Summary
Public comments regarding dog bite statistics and USPS policy regarding dogs
Review of why board was created, board mission and goals
Facilitated discussion on future direction of the board
2016 board priorities determined through mutli-voting
Board Decisions
The 2016 priorities are:
1. Spay and neuter policy and how to increase those numbers
2. Animal abuse and neglect
3. Leash laws and reducing the number of running at large animals
4. Microchipping
5. Dog licensing-responsible pet ownership
6. Breeder license and fees
7. Performance metrics to share with community
8. Obtaining the voice of the community through survey or other methods
Discussion
Pros and cons of mandatory policy and possible impact on animal lifespan
Actions for next meeting
Review spay and neuter best practices from other cities ( Robin Bradley, CMO will provide to board
prior to next meeting)
Review data on the following:
o Number of licensed dogs who have been sterilized (Animal Control staff)
o Number of strays taken into Animal Shelter who have been sterilized (Animal Control staff)
o Pet owners who are repeat offenders in prior 2 years (dog has been brought in as a stray
multiple times) (Animal Control staff)
o How low cost spay/neuter clinics affect intakes at the shelter (Animal control/KHS staff)
Board will continue d the discussion on spay/neuter policy
The meeting was adjourned at 5:14 by Stephanie Fisk McCurdy. The next meeting is set for March
2nd, 2016, 4:00-5:15 pm at the Kansas Humane Society.
