Pawnee, Wichita, KS 67211. DAB members, staff/presenters, and residents also had the option to participate virtually via the platform Zoom, and the meeting was live-streamed on the District 3 Facebook page. Council Member Jared Cerullo and 10 DAB members, five City staff, and six members of the public were in attendance. The current agenda and minutes from June 30, 2021 were approved. Wichita Police Department DAB 3 • August 4, 2021 • Minutes • Page 1 Community Policing Officers shared district and city-wide statistics and crime trends and department updates. Staff also discussed relevant public safety topics and answered questions from the DAB and public. Officer Wesley Jensen, Patrol South shared the following:  Patrol South is doing a pilot program regarding officer shifts. It is helping with staffing, and officers are liking the new schedule.  All of the Community Policing positions will be filled by September.  Felony crimes are down, except for aggravated assaults. A specialized team is focusing on aggravated assaults. Officer Alli Larison, Patrol East shared the following:  WPD is doing 90-day rotations to address aggravated assaults.  Patrol East held a successful school supply drive recently.  Patrol East will do a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. 2. Wichita Fire Department Staff provided monthly district statistics, shared information on seasonal fire and public safety topics, and answered questions from the DAB and public. Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz shared the following information:  Reduced number of house fires and calls in District 3 this past month.  Fourth of July season stats: o 2,000 informational fliers about fireworks were given out. o 88 citations were issued between July 1-4. o WFD confiscated illegal fireworks. o 1,139 complaints were called into the complaint line this year. o There were 1,199 911 calls on July 4. o There was a reduction in the number of fire incidents this season. There were 39 fire calls compared to 63 last year. There were seven house fires last year and only three this year. o There were 47 injuries to individuals this year, an increase of one compared to last year. The leading cause of injuries were caused by sparklers, smoke bombs, and firecrackers. 3. Wichita Public Library Staff shared department updates with a focus on the services, programs, and events at District 3’s Walters Branch Library. Sean Jones, Communication Specialist shared the following: The Fall Gardening Series kicks off Thursday, August 5, 6 p.m. online via Zoom. Each Thursday for five weeks, our friends with the K-State Research and Extension – Sedgwick County Master Gardeners program will discuss different fall gardening topics to help you get your yard ready for the spring. You can register for these virtual programs at wichitalibrary.org/gardening. Here are the topics:  Turning Dirt Into Soil: The Miracle of Microbes (August 5)  Perennials: The Garden’s Foundation (August 12)  Landscape Design (August 19)  The Ultimate Guide to Fall Lawn Care (August 26)  Where’s the Watermelon? Seasonal, Local Eating in ICT (September 2) Now is the time to start shopping for back-to-school supplies. A Wichita Public Library card is a great item to add to your supply list. You can learn more about registering for a library card on our website, wichitalibrary.org, or by stopping by any library location. We are wrapping up our summer Candid Conversations series, “Wichita’s Diverse History of Baseball,” with an exhibition softball game on Sunday, August 15, 6-8:30 p.m. at McAdams Park. This softball game will celebrate Wichita’s history of baseball and the longstanding impact of the McAdams urban park. Wichita Urban Professionals is organizing the event that, in addition to the game, will include a DJ, games and activities for children, free giveaways and more! The fall Evolve guide will be available soon at all Wichita Public Library locations. This is the joint activities guide with the Library, CityArts and Park and Recreation. The guide will highlight programs from September-December. Make sure you pick yours up the next time you’re in the Library. A ribbon-cutting for the Walters Branch Library will be held on September 18. Family of Dr. Ronald W. Walters will be in attendance. All DAB members are invited. International Rescue Committee Renee Davis presented information about the IRC and its community programming. Updates, Issues, and Reports Michael Loop shared information about Neighborhood Night Out. His neighborhood will host an NNO party at the Clapp Park clubhouse. Anyone is invited. DAB 3 • August 4, 2021 • Minutes • Page 3 Jessica Lucas asked if Clapp Park will have bike trails. CM Cerullo shared there is not a bike trail, but the plan includes a pump track. Lucas said there should be an ability to be on trails as a bicyclist or pedestrian. Lucas also shared concerns about failing infrastructure and asked what we are doing as a City to look at our infrastructure needs and how heat can impact infrastructure. CM Cerullo responded that there is a public push for the City to create a Sustainability Advisory Board. He said Council continues to work on replacing Transit buses with electrical buses. Emily Fogg shared Mead will host a NNO party at the Mead pocket park. There will be a bounce house, food, and activities.
