Off Agenda items: William Purcell, 421 Scouller, had the front page of the Jan. 30 issue of the Wichita Eagle where the headline was “Clinic won’t offer late term abortions.” He said Wichita has been free of abortions since May 31, 2009, when George Tiller was murdered. He said recently the nation was shocked when 20 little children were killed by a maniac who then took his own life. But it seems to have passed unnoticed and people don’t’ seem to care that 60,000 little children were killed by George Tiller at his building on Kellogg. Purcell requested that Councilman Longwell encourage his fellow council members to take whatever legal action necessary to prevent George Tiller’s clinic from ever4 being used for this evil purpose again. Action: Receive and file. District V Minutes 2 February 4, 2013 Staff Presentations 3. WPD/Community Police Report Officer Lori Kimrey, WPD, reported that in the 16 Beat they are continuing to work with the Law Dept. and City Housing to ensure quality tenants and improve the quality of life in that area. This beat had 35 larcenies in January, seven residential burglaries, five auto thefts and one nonresidential burglary. Larcenies were reported down on the 18 beat. The 18, 19 and 199 beats have experienced an increase in burglaries. The suspects are entered through the back of the homes usually between 5 and 9 p.m. Police suspect they may be targeting houses where the lights aren’t on; mostly jewelry and small electronics are being taken. On the 199 beat, suspects in several recent YMCA larcenies have been identified and charged on some cases. Action: Receive and file. 4. Wichita Fire Department Report Captain Ken Ast, WFD, reported that last month there were no suspicious fires in District 5 that required an investigation. He reminded everyone about the proper use of chimineas. He said they should only be used to burn small sticks and put off a little heat. He said trying to burn a 6 foot log, or burning all the leaves in your yard, are not appropriate chiminea uses. Bryan Frye mentioned he had noticed a very large inventory of chimineas at a local business; he suggested the Fire Department might want to talk to them about providing customers with instructions. Mike Greene asked if the city is currently under a burn ban; Ast said no, but if we don’t get some moisture, it is possible we will implement a ban. Action: Receive and file. Board Agenda 6.
