Page |1 District V Advisory Board Minutes April 3, 2017 www.wichita.gov The District V Advisory Board meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station #21 located at 2110 N. 135th St W., Wichita, KS 67235. Nancy Duling with GraceMed will be appointed to replace her in June Public Agenda Items None Off-Agenda Items None Staff Reports Fire Department Report: Capt. Mike Malter, reported.  One fire in District V in March: Fatality $125,000 in damage to structure. Cause is still being determined  Hydrant and building inspections have begun Page |2  Burn Ban is in effect the entire month of April. No burn permits will be issued. No outside burning (including chimineas and firepits). Outdoor grilling allowed Community Police Report: Officer Darrin Williams reported.  Egret nuisance  Wagonmaster’s Chili Feed for Officer Arterburn raised $48,000Officer Arterburn continues to make improvement at Colorado Rehab  Canine Officer Rooster Memorial Service – very well attended from officers across the region  21st & Maize – car break-ins continue to be a problem at Planet Fitness  Residential burglaries on the rise due to people leaving their garage doors open  April 8 – Law Enforcement Parade and Block Party. Begins at 10:30 downtown Park and Recreation Department Report: Larry Hoetmer, Landscape Architect, Park & Rec, reported.  Bunny Blast Egg Hunt at Watson Park on April 8 (ages 2-10)  Get Fit Wichita at Lawrence Dumont – April 8, 8:30am – 10:00am  Open Street ICT on Sept. 24, Noon to 4pm – Four mile stretch of Douglas will be closed for four hours for many simultaneous events. www.Openstreetsict.org  Red Barn Park – Total Renovation – All new playground including equipment and sidewalks Libraries Report: Tracie Partridge, Westlink Branch Senior Librarian, written report attached to end of Minutes. CM Frye reported that a tour for DAB members of the new downtown library is still being finalized for later in April Public Works Report: Shawn Mellies, Chief Design Engineer, Public Works, reported.  Kellogg/235  Construction continues on schedule  Kellogg will be down to two lanes in each direction beginning in April and will last six months  Southbound to westbound closed until Fall 2017  Eastbound ramp from West Street to Kellogg to open in Fall 2017  West Street estimated to be complete by Fall 2017  I-235 bridge work has resumed on the northbound bridges as well as the 25th Street bridge. No access at 25th St. to I235  Tyler Road – New CIP programmed with additional funding – can’t begin construction until approved  Hoover Bike Path – Zoo Blvd. to 29th St N. – working on RFP for design due Friday, April 7  Central Park & Maize Rd. – Signal timing has been changed. Will monitor to see if improvements help congestion  21st St., Tyler Rd to Crestline – completed  119th – Maple to Central – thermal crack repair begins mid-April Action Taken: Motion made to receive and file all staff reports. Passed 7-0. New Business Pracht Wetlands Park Update: Larry Hoetmer, Landscape Architect, Park & Recreation, provided an update on the design of Pracht Wetlands Park. Due to the unique nature of this park, an unusual level of collaboration is involved.  Will be a signature park – national recognition  Construction plans should be finished in the next couple of months  Seeking federal grant for phase 2. Phase 1 is funded in CIP Action Taken: Provided positive comments and feedback. Motion made to receive and file. Passed 7-0. Page |3 Old Business None Meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m. The next District V Advisory Board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017, at Fire Station #21, located at 2110 N. 135th St W., Wichita, KS 67235. Westlink Library Report Teen Volunteers The Library started accepting applications for its summer Teen Volunteer Program on March 24th. Although the Westlink Branch does not open until 10, when staff arrived at 9:15, there were a line of eager teens and their parents ready to sign up. The branch registered 34 by 11:06 and was at 44 by closing on the 26th. At this time, there are still a few openings at Westlink. If the branch does run out of spaces, spots are available at other Wichita Public Library locations. As a reminder, in order to participate, teens must be  Aged 13 to 17,  Able to work 1 to 2 2-hour shifts a week,  Able to start sometime between May 18th and June 5th,  And able to volunteer for at least six weeks. Young Collectors On April 1st, Westlink will start accepting participants in its Young Collectors Display series. Through it, children under 18 years of age have the opportunity to share their interests with others. Collections must be young child friendly, not displayed previously, and displayed for a calendar month. In March, 9-year-old John shared his love of pixel art, which he creates using graph paper, crayons, and markers. John creates both2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art. To participate, call Westlink at 337-9456 during normal business hours starting April 1st or visit. Page |4 Children’s Programming The spring children’s programming session concludes April 13th at Westlink. Activities will resume June 1st. Staff take a break in order to prepare and promote the Library’s summer reading incentive programs in local schools and then, on May 18th to start registering interested children and teens in these programs. Upcoming Activities Although there are lots of activities occurring throughout the Wichita Public Library system in April, two to highlight at Westlink are adult programs called Coloring for the Fun of It and Cable: Cutting the Cord. Coloring for the Fun of It will occur on Wednesday, April 12th from 6 to 7:30. Although this program occurs the second Wednesday of every month. This session will be a little different because participants will be able to color sheets made from photos of Westlink. All coloring supplies are provided. However, participants can always bring their own. Cable: Cutting the Cord will occur on Tuesday, April 25th from 6 to 7:30. Participants will learn how Internet- based streaming services and devices can allow you to watch TV without a cable subscription. Presenters will discuss digital antennas, smart TVS, and other devices. For a complete list of Library activities, please visit www.wichitalibrary.org.
