The District V Advisory Board meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station #21, located at 2110 N. 135th

Need community input in the Walkability Audit – can be done through paper audit or
through electronic audit
Live results available online – map depicting where audits have been done
3. Off-Agenda Items:
Harold Schlechtweg, Advocacy Coordinator, International Rescue Committee: We are a
refugee resettlement agency and since our opening in 2012 we have resettled more than 1,600
refugees in the Wichita metro area. As a resettlement agency we provide vocationally-oriented
ESL classes, cultural orientation, help refugees find housing and jobs, and navigate the various
government agencies they must deal with.
District 2 has the largest number of refugees
635 actively receiving services, 186 in District 2
All refugees are fully vetted before they come to the US
Considered permanent residents
Can become citizens after five years
Employment services end after five years
In most cases, they are successfully sufficient within 60-90 days
Refugees pay for their own flights
Organization relies heavily on volunteers
Employment services focus on construction, hospitality and manufacturing industries

8. Public Works Report: Shawn Mellies, Special Projects Engineer, reported.

All ramps open by end of September except NB to WB
First weekend in October the entire interchange will be shut down. Then NB to
WB will be open
OP3 Micro surfacing
21st from Hoover to Maize Road – later this month
13th – Maize Rd. to 119th St. – Spring 2019
Ridge Rd. sidewalk to 29th to Cloisters in 2019
13th, Azure to 135th – in 2019 – Meet with neighborhoods later this fall
29th & Maize Intersection – RFP for design will be out by the end of the year
Staff evaluated northbound right turn movements – over 8 hours, distribution was
split between through and right turns; adding additional pavement would require
closing the ditch and relocating traffic signal
Proposed CIP includes design funding in 2018 and construction funding in 2022
for full intersection improvements
Staff will continue to monitor traffic counts and movements, evaluate for interim
improvements
Action Taken: Motion made to Receive and File all Staff Reports. Motion PASSED 7-0.

Gary Janzen, City Engineer, will give an update on District V projects.
