District VI Advisory Board Minutes www.wichita.gov Wednesday Evergreen Resource Center February 5, 2018 2700 N. Woodland, Wichita, KS 67204 6:30 p.m. Conference Room The District VI Advisory Board meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Resource Center conference room, 2700 N. Woodland, Wichita, KS 67204. There were seven District Advisory Board members, the Council Member, five staff members and three members of the public in attendance. Members Present Staff Present James Deckard Officer Roddy Winder, WPD Angela Martinez Officer Nate Schwiethale, WPD Linda Matney Officer Juan Carlos Atondo, WPD Denise O’Leary-Siemer Lieutenant Brady Bergman, WFD Shaun Rojas Brandon Findley, OCS Joel Weihe Lorenza Snyder Council Member Cindy Claycomb Members Absent Guests Gregory Boyajian Listed on last page Gisela Peña Deborah Sanders Call to Order Council Member Cindy Claycomb called the meeting to order. Approval of Minutes The minutes for January 17, 2018, were approved. Motion passed (7-0) (Weihe/Deckard) Public Agenda Mark Haines, 1801 Woodard Ave, spoke about the fireworks issue. He asked why there had not been a citizen committee formed to work with the Fire Department to give a citizen perspective on the issues surrounding fireworks. Council Member Claycomb said it had been discussed and Council may decide to do that in the future. Staff Reports Fire Department Report: Lieutenant Brady Bergman gave an update on fire incidents in the District. He reported that the Fire Department had 75,000 calls last year and have already received 5,000 calls this year. He also reported that there has been an increase in arsons in the area lately. Action Taken: Receive and file February 5, 2018 Community Police Report: Officer Roddy Winder, WPD Patrol West, reported that there was a homicide at the 700 block of N Edwards and that this was not a random act. He also reported that here was a robbery at the Dollar General on 13th Street and an increase in auto thefts due to people leaving their cars running unattended in the mornings. Officer Nate Schwiethale, WPD Patrol South, spoke about the increase in graffiti in the Downtown area, but they believe to have identified the suspect and the graffiti has slowed down. He also spoke about the effectiveness of the downtown camera system in deterring crime. He also reported that Downtown businesses can have their security cameras monitored by WPD for a fee. Officer Juan Carlos Atondo, WPD Patrol North, spoke about the repeated gang graffiti issues at the Evergreen Recreation Center. He reported that they had a suspect in mind and was picked up on a parole violation prior to the graffiti stopping. New Business Evergreen Stakeholder Presentation Brandon Findley, Office of Community Services, gave a presentation about the City’s mission and vision for the future of the Evergreen Complex and also spoke about options being considered for the $1 million Evergreen Neighborhood Center renovation. Action Taken: Receive and file. Updates from Council Member The next DAB VI meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 5, 2018, at the Evergreen Resource Center, 2700 N. Woodland, Wichita, KS 67203. Fire Department Report Staff will give a brief report on District VI issues, problems and events. Recommended Action: Receive and file. 4. Community Police Report Community Police Officers will give a brief report on District VI issues, problems and events. Recommended Action: Receive and file. NEW BUSINESS 5. Evergreen Stakeholder Presentation Council Member Cindy Claycomb and Community Service Representative Brandon Findley will present on the mission and vision of the Evergreen complex including partnerships, civic engagement, cultural celebration, workforce development, business development and future programming. Issues of Concern DAB members have the opportunity to ask questions regarding City topics and identify issues of concern to be addressed. Recommended Action: Receive and file. 7. Neighborhood Reports DAB members may report events/activities from the neighborhood/homeowners groups in their areas. Recommended Action: Receive and propose appropriate action.
