7. Rehabilitation of Amidon Avenue Bridge at Arkansas River
Shawn Mellies, Public Works & Utilities will provide information
Background: On July 20, 2021, the City Council approved an agreement with JEO to evaluate
options to rehabilitate or replace the Amidon Avenue Bridge at the Arkansas River. The project is
necessary based upon the most recent biennial bridge inspection.
Analysis: The existing bridge is a four lane structure with a 4 ½-foot wide sidewalk on both sides
of the bridge. The proposed design concept will replace the existing structure and add a 10’ wide
multi-use path to the west side of the bridge and a 6’ wide sidewalk t o the east side of the bridge.
The bridge project was identified for special consideration by the Design Council, allotting additional
funding and requiring a higher level of aesthetic enhancement beyond standard design guidelines.
The JEO design team includes local artist Daniel Gegan, who will be involved with the design of the
lighting and handrail enhancements on the bridge. Construction is planned to begin in late summer
of 2022 and be completed in the fall of 2023. The bridge will be closed during construction with a
signed detour to Broadway or West Street.
Financial Considerations: The existing budget for the project is $500,000. The approved 2022-
2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) also includes $5,000,000 for the construction of the
project and $225,000 for the aesthetic enhancements, both in 2022. The project is funded by Local
Sales Tax.
Legal Considerations: None
Recommendation/Actions: It is recommended that the District Advisory Board recommend
approval of the design concept presented by staff.
