City of Columbia, Missouri Meeting Minutes Mayor's Task Force on the U.S.S. Columbia Tuesday, May 10, 2016 Board Room 3:30 PM Walton Building 300 S Providence Rd Columbia Missouri I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair Anne Moore at 4 p.m. II. INTRODUCTIONS Introductions were made. Guest: Keith Glindemann City staff: JJ Musgrove and Joyce Gelina Present: 9- Anne Moore, Anne Clark, John Clark, Peter Koukola, William Markgraf, Robert Ross, Becky Strauss, Marty Walker and Chris Kelly III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA A motion to approve the agenda as amended made by Koukola; seconded by Kelly; motion carried. IV. MAYOR'S TASK FORCE REPORT JJ Musgrove was asked to distinguish between meetings of the task force and meetings of the non-profit committee. He said the main difference is the type of business discussed in each meeting. For instance, specifics of any fundraising project would be conducted only during non-profit committee meetings and city staff does not attend those meetings; the treasurer’s report could be done in either meeting; and agendas and minutes for the task force need to be posted timely on the city’s website, which will be done by city staff. In addition, Sunshine Laws would be in effect for task force meetings. Appreciation was extended to Musgrove for his good work. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes from April 12, 2016, were approved with a motion by John Clark, seconded by Koukola; motion carried. VI. REPORTS Treasurer's Report John Clark reported the balance of $1,188.67 as of May 10, 2016; no changes from last report. She said Commander Edgerton had phoned and was very appreciative of the contributions received from Columbia Missouri; notes will be written before the crew deploys. He also informed her that the Navy has changed its former decision and will finance the purchase of exercise equipment for crew members, so the money raised will be used in other ways to increase morale during deployment. Mayor's Task Force Report Was moved to beginning of mtg Crew Relations Due to the Navy providing support for the crew’s exercise equipment, it was decided by Commander Edgerton to fund “half-way night” by providing trivia about their Namesake City with contributions and prizes. Appreciation for this support was expressed by the crew. Members of the Family Readiness Group were very thankful for the donation of half-way boxes. Koukola was recognized for the donation of Mizzou playing cards; other contributions included mementos showcasing Columbia, Flat Branch Pub, and Mizzou. Moore reported on the recent presentation of the ‘party in a box’ sent by Commander Edgerton, officers, and crew of the USS Columbia to the Mizzou College of Engineering, as well as the presentation of a plaque to the MU Athletic Department; in addition to Moore and Robert Ross, Captain Kevin King, Director, MU Naval ROTC, Gary Link, MU Athletic Department Assistant Athletic Director, and Wren Baker, MU Athletic Department Deputy Director, attended. She said the welcome received from the new leaders at Mizzou Athletics was very warm and enthusiastic, and denoted future support. Even though the event was not covered by the press, the outcome exceeded expectations. Pictures from both presentations were passed around for all to see. VII. GENERAL COMMENTS BY PUBLIC, MEMBERS AND STAFF Moore complemented the work of task force members and said that Columbia Missouri’s support continues to outperform the other two Sister Cities. John Clark spoke about his Vietnam experiences as a POW and the efforts by the military to free him and other POWs. VIII. NEXT MEETING DATE None was set. IX. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned with a motion by Markgraf and second by Anne Clark at 4:30 p.m. Members of the public may attend any open meeting.
