Roll call and approval of previous meeting minutes. Meeting convened at 4:10 PM. Ms. McSweeney moved, seconded by Ald. Kovac, approval of the meeting minutes from April 8, 2014. Present 16 - Murphy, Cubias, DeLind, Kingsbury, McSweeney, Morris, Ashleigh- Wolfe, Flores, Kosarzycki, Kovac, Robison, Harpole, Klose, Layden, Balistreri and Allen Excused 1 - Murphy 2. Presentation regarding public art along the waterways by Kevin Shafer, MMSD Executive Director, and Kris Martinsek, MMSD Commissioner. Kevin Schafer from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District present. MMSD is looking to put public art along waterways. They are currently working with Mary Miss on some work and will be coming to future meetings with more specific projects. They are also looking to include an educational facet by working on projects with MIAD and UWM. MMSD is removing concrete from the Menomonee River and would like to add public art upon completion. Ald. Murphy stated that land easement projects have been successful and have provided an example for the rest of the country. He suggested that Mr. Schafer work with the Public Art Subcommittee on funding sources. There is an opportunity to explain the water cycle to children through art projects. He would also like some board members to work with the MMSD board. Ms. McSweeney, Mr. Robison, Ms. Klose, and Ms. Morris volunteered. 3. Presentation regarding the Interfaith Lifetime Art Competition by Jean Schmitz. Jean Schmitz from the Interfaith Older Adult Program present . She has been working on the 27th Annual Lifetime Art Exhibit in which 25 pieces of art were chosen. The grand opening event is at the InterContinental Hotel on May 17th. She explained that City of Milwaukee Page 1 MILWAUKEE ARTS BOARD Meeting Minutes May 13, 2014 the organizatin has been working to show older adult art works. Some art is currently viewable on the organization's Facebook page. She would like to organize intergenerational projects in the future. They have teamed up with the University of Wisconsin's Peck School of Arts on a project, but would also like to work with the Milwaukee Institute for Art & Design. At this point, all art projects have been done in oil or watercolor, but they are looking to expand to other mediums. They would also like to expand showings to include art galleries. Projects have partially been funded by the Helen Bader Foundation, but more funding will be needed. Ald. Murphy stated that an exhibit in the City Hall rotunda should be planned. Ms. Cubias asked if any work has been done with the United Community Center. Ms. Schmitz stated that while the organizations have worked together, the UCC was not included in this specific project. She would like for them to be included in the future. 4. Vote on 2014 Project Grant Award recommendations from Bill DeLind and the MAB Grant Review Committee. Ald. Murphy stated he received correspondence from the Milwaukee Symphony Board of Directors appealing the recommendation. The appeal will be distributed and discussed at the next meeting Mr. Delind, Ms. Allen, Ms. Balistreri, and Ms. Layden served on the Grant Review Panel. The following members abstained from voting on the following organizations due to relationships with the organizations: Anne Kingsbury - Woodland Pattern Emilia Layden - Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Haggerty Museum of Art, and Skylight Music Theatre Corp. Daisy Cubias - Latino Arts William DeLind - Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra David Flores - First Stage Children's Theatre Tina Klose - Jewish Museum Milwaukee Sandra McSweeney - Alverno College Mr. DeLind moved approval, seconded by Ald. Kovac, of the recommendations. 5. Annual Congressional Art Award announcement. Ms. Witte explained that Congresswoman Gwen Moore invites high school students in her district to participate in the Congressional Art Awards . Funds from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and administered by the Department of City Development and Milwaukee Arts Board provide for cash awards and travel expenses for the winners. Ms. Kosarzycki stated she participated in the voting. She would like to see more students participating and suggested that the lack of art funding in schools may be a contributing factor to the turnout. Ald. Murphy stated that the Arts Board could help promote the award in future . A press conference at City Hall could be arranged. Ms. Balistreri stated that she could volunteer some time to help increase future submissions. City of Milwaukee Page 2 MILWAUKEE ARTS BOARD Meeting Minutes May 13, 2014 6.
