200 E. Wells Street City of Milwaukee Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202 Meeting Minutes MILWAUKEE ARTS BOARD PUBLIC ART SUBCOMMITTEE POLLY MORRIS, CHAIR Tina Klose, Emilia Layden, Tim Murphy, Sandra McSweeney, and William Robison Staff Assistant, Jessica Celella, 286-2775, Fax: 286-3456, jlcelel@milwaukee.gov Tuesday, May 13, 2014 3:00 PM Room 303, City Hall 1. Roll call and approval of previous meeting minutes. Meeting convened at 3:20 PM. Ms. Wolfe arrived at 3:30 PM. Present 4 - Morris, Ashleigh-Wolfe, Robison and Klose Excused 1 - Murphy 2. Design of Bridge Railing for Beerline Trail Appearing with Ben Schultz was Chris Grandt from Riverworks Development Corporation. Mr. Schultz stated that a final design for the bridge railing will be needed within a year. He would be able to bring KSA to a future meeting to present design ideas . He also asked committee members to look at a street view of the area to help make suggestions. Mr. Grandt stated that the BID has a budget and could potentially help find resources for lighting on the bridge railing. Ms. Morris stated that the mural under the bridge is an integral part of the site and should be preserved. That may make the design more complicated. Installing a simple railing first may be the best course of action because it would be compatible with more potential designs. Different artists could create designs for each of the gateways. Mr. Robison suggested that the railing should integrate well with the current bridge. The focus of the design should relate to the structure. Because the design will be complicated, he suggests to design for the end product and work backwards. He also stated that project managers should confer with the Department of Transportation about lighting to confirm parameters . Ms. Klose suggested an industrial design, possibly including gears to match complement the bridge. 3. Newaukee: Proposal Review Process for Projects City of Milwaukee Page 1 MILWAUKEE ARTS BOARD PUBLIC Meeting Minutes May 13, 2014 ART SUBCOMMITTEE This item was held, to be scheduled for a later meeting. 4. Public Art Developments on the Hank Aaron State Trail Melissa Cook - Hank Aaron State Trail Manager Eddee Daniel - Co-Chair of the Public Arts Committee - Friends of the Hank Aaron State Trail Mr. Daniel states the last piece of public art installed along the trail was a sculpture by Peter Flannery. It is located at the east end of the trail extension for Three Bridges Park. The park itself is also an artistic design. Three copper shelters have been installed and signs will be made to identify the shelters on the trail. Ms. Cook states that the three proposals received for signage were not viable. They have now worked collaboratively with a design firm to meet the entry sign requirements, while still maintaining an artistic design. The next step is to bid out the design for fabrication. One requirement is the materials must be easy to clean to combat vandalism issues. She states no public art has been installed along the trail west of Miller Park, but it may be considered. Ms. Morris stated that the committee could help promote RFPs for new projects. 5. New Work Fund The Mary Miss contract has been signed. She will come to a meeting this summer. The Bay View Bus Stop project will be occurring. A press release will be going out soon about Listening to Mitchell . Activities will be occurring from June through September. The timeline for 2015 will be discussed at the next meeting. 6. Conservation Fund The conservation project re-opens July 1st. Ms. Morris will circulate a copy of the application. The $4,500 that went to Esperanza Unida will be returned. The fate of the mural has not yet been determined. 7. Old Business 8.
