Nashua Ethnic Awareness Committee Minutes for Meeting 18 April 2013, 3:30 pm, Nashua Public Library Members Present: Ann Ackerman, Tom Lopez, Tom Woodward, Scott Jaquith, Paul Bergeron Members Absent: Carlos Camacho, Sharon Dalton, Muchmua Niva, Jennifer Hinderer, Carmen Nunez, Johnny Perez, Rep. from Health Dept, Alderman Melizi-Golia, Patricia Howson, Ronni Karlsberg, Bruce & Mary Bradshaw, Andrew Smith, Claudia Mahr Visitors present: Janeth Orozco, Bernadette Melton-Plante and Dendrea Smith. Opening Outgoing Chair Ackerman welcomed all and after introductions the meeting began. The minutes of the March minutes were approved with a correction (name of Lutheran Social Services corrected under old business). Report of Sub and Associated Groups Scott gave a brief update on DMC There wasn’t one re: Initiative Report of Events Working Group Tom (Lopez) shared some of the ideas and possibilities and that the group(s) will be meeting soon. Old Business The “50” Refugees – Scott attended a meeting in which there was a discussion. He was able to share our concerns re: communications (or lack thereof) to city agencies, safe and lead-free housing etc. The first three families of approx. 8 people will be arriving in late April – early May. 50 – 70 other individuals will be arriving late summer – early September. At this time it is believed that they will be coming from Iraq, Burma, Butar, and Somalia. There was discussion on how we may support Initiative efforts. Additionally, Rev. Woodward said that he would make sure that the Interfaith Council which represents the Faith-Based Community is aware and potentially be of assistance. He raised the question of establishing “host families” who could assist in the cultural adjustment to settling/living in Nashua. Discussion included some of the needs and which EAC could make their groups aware of are: Cultural Competency in Schools, Hospitals, etc. – people will need training Translation services Child Abuse Prevention i.e. parenting classes Mental Health Services Can and is it EAC’s role to help bring partners including direct service partners to a meeting. Reach out to those not at the table. Questions i.e. where are Lutheran Social Services (LSS) and International Institute of Manchester (IIM) working together and where are they competing? It was noted that LSS has a Nashua office. IIM has to send someone down. Another question – where are there some sustainable models? Up With People – Scott gave a report and New England plans for performances in fall 2014. Resource List – last call for additions & changes Meeting day – is changing in May to the 3rd Tuesday of the month Rally for Immigrant Reform - Janeth and Tom (Woodward) gave a report of the event, speeches, and concerns expressed at it
