There wasn’t one re: Initiative
Report of Events Working Group
Tom (Lopez) shared some of the ideas and possibilities and that the group(s) will be meeting soon.
Old Business
The “50” Refugees – Scott attended a meeting in which there was a discussion. He was able to share our
concerns re: communications (or lack thereof) to city agencies, safe and lead-free housing etc. The first
three families of approx. 8 people will be arriving in late April – early May. 50 – 70 other individuals will
be arriving late summer – early September. At this time it is believed that they will be coming from Iraq,
Burma, Butar, and Somalia. There was discussion on how we may support Initiative efforts.
Additionally, Rev. Woodward said that he would make sure that the Interfaith Council which represents
the Faith-Based Community is aware and potentially be of assistance. He raised the question of
establishing “host families” who could assist in the cultural adjustment to settling/living in Nashua.
Discussion included some of the needs and which EAC could make their groups aware of are:
Cultural Competency in Schools, Hospitals, etc. – people will need training
Translation services
Child Abuse Prevention i.e. parenting classes
Mental Health Services
Can and is it EAC’s role to help bring partners including direct service partners to a meeting. Reach out
to those not at the table. Questions i.e. where are Lutheran Social Services (LSS) and International
Institute of Manchester (IIM) working together and where are they competing? It was noted that LSS
has a Nashua office. IIM has to send someone down. Another question – where are there some
sustainable models?
Up With People – Scott gave a report and New England plans for performances in fall 2014.
Resource List – last call for additions & changes
Meeting day – is changing in May to the 3rd Tuesday of the month
Rally for Immigrant Reform - Janeth and Tom (Woodward) gave a report of the event, speeches, and
concerns expressed at it
