Mine Falls Park Advisory Committee February 3, 2014 Item Topic Lead Discussion / Conclusions 1. Call to Order Greg Andruskevich - Meeting called to order by committee chairman Greg Andruskevich at 7:00 PM - Attendees: Greg Andruskevich, Dick Gillespie, Ed Moran, Peter Testa, Nick Caggiano, Nick Serpa, Brian Edwards 2. Park/Rec. Nick Caggiano - Volunteer T-Shirts: Order is ready to be placed. Kids shirts will be added to the order. - Jackets/Hats: For new committee members (Nick Serpa, Brian Edwards, Kim Crider and a special request by Nick C for a new jacket for Joshua Segal). - Canal Clean-up: Ready to move out to bid. Contract will include requirement for vendor to determine best vehicle to complete the work as requested and to accept full responsibility of any/all damages any vehicle may cause to the canal berm. Board of Public Works has approved the chemical treatment of the Mill Pond and Canal at a cost of $21,679.36 from cell tower fund to aid in controlling invasive aquatic species. Next step is Finance Committee review on Feb. 13. The treatment will be applied in late June. - Cell Tower Fund: Latest balance is $276,611.86. Expected expenditures this coming year, Red trail raised boardwalk (unknown cost at this time). - Utility Vehicle: Quote received & accepted for John Deere 4x4 w/front mount winch. $14,617.90. - Brochures: The new Parks & Rec. Citizen Services Coordinator, Allison Cody has been tasked with re-vamping and updating the Mine Falls Park brochures. Allison has included updated pictures from committee chair Greg Andruskevich. Comments: Nick Serpa suggested trail days be more prevalent. - Public Works Week: At Stello’s Stadium in May. Seeking volunteers from the committee to hand out literature & greet attendees. Greg Andruskevich stepped up. - Closing: Red trail raised boardwalk will go out for design bid within 30 days. Summer intern letters will be sent out shortly. 3. Chairman’s Notes Greg Andruskevich - History Day: Received a request from the Nashua Public Library for a committee member(s) attend to hand out brochures and assist with discussing park history. Committee determined this is not a viable trail day activity due to the dangers involved while working from a kayak. This is outside the committee scope of duties and would be strictly voluntary. - Carol Rust canoe/kayak launch: EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) representative stated a preferred place would be at the Millyard end of the canal due to ease of parking and short walk to the canal. Dick Gillespie has ideas on a more simple and cost effective design could be utilized. This should be discussed in future meetings. - Gatehouse: Greg Andruskevich will staff the Gatehouse on non-trail days to allow for more public exposure. - Capital Expenditures: Discussions on hold until after the Red trail raised boardwalk cost is known. 4. Old Business All - Gatehouse cleaning: Park & Rec. crew will handle this and may utilize the portable power washer. - Coloring Books: Nick will follow up with Pam Anderson on inventory remaining and what else, if anything, is needed. - Committee Walkthrough: Tentative for 3/29/14 09:00 @ Gatehouse entrance. Weather reschedule date 4/5/14. - Beaver: Damage has ceased on the blue trail where trees were wrapped with wire caging. Purple trail seems to be targeted recently. Park & Rec. will hire contractor to relocate the beaver from the Cove and will dismantle the lodge/dam. 5. New Business All - Social Media: Nick Serpa will start a campaign to raise Park exposure through social media outlets. Nick Caggiano feels this is a great way to get exposure and stated there are a number of criteria that need to be adhered to for this to happen. This is not something the Mine Falls Committee would recommend to Park & Rec to consider as previous attempts have resulted in vandalism and extra unnecessary costs. 6.
