CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2012
NHS NORTH BOARD ROOM
A meeting of the Construction Projects Committee was held at NHS North Board Room, on Thursday,
May 31, 2012. Alderman McCarthy called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m.
Present: Alderman McCarthy, Alderman Tabacsko, Mr. Mosher, Mr. Ryder
Also Present: Mr. Donovan, Mr. Smith, Chris Nikias, Mr. DuBois, Channel 99 Videographer
ARCHITECT’S REPORT
Mr. Smith
The architect could not be here tonight due to personal reasons. Basically Charlotte Avenue is looking at submittals.
And all we need from him for Fairgrounds and Ledge is that the punch list items have been completed.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER’S REPORT
Mr. Nikias
We are 100% done with both Fairgrounds and Ledge Street. As Shawn said, we’re waiting for Turner to verify
punch list items. We did go through and finish commissioning. I think the only item outstanding right now is for
the Committee to approve the Substantial Completion application for Ledge Street. Also at Ledge Street, we do still
have to finish the cafeteria floor when the kids get out of school. That is just over a week’s process.
In terms of Charlotte Avenue, we have started some of the boiler room work. Asbestos is scheduled to begin this
when the kids are out of school. After that we can pretty much start to fill that room with slab and get the room
ready for the boilers.
APPROVAL OF INVOICES
ALDERMAN TABACSKO MOVED TO APPROVE THE FOLLOWING INVOICES FOR
FAIRGROUNDS AND LEDGE STREET SCHOOLS: TO HARVEY CONSTRUCTION FOR
$132,473.06; AND TO TURNER BUILDING SCIENCE FOR $2.851.80.
SO VOTED.
ALDERMAN TABACSKO MOVED TO APPROVE THE FOLLOWING INVOICES FOR
CHARLOTTE AVENUE SCHOOL: TO HARVEY CONSTRUCTION FOR $46,924.29; TO
TURNER BUILDING SCIENCE FOR $19,483.05; TO CX ASSOCIATES FOR $1,770; AND TO
PAGE STREET RENTALS FOR $380.
SO VOTED.
CONSTRUCTION PROJECT COMMITTEE MEETING May 31, 2012
OTHER
Mr. Smith
At the last meeting we left the issue of moving the boiler from Charlotte Avenue to Broad Street, and replacing a
boiler there that’s approximately 50 years old. The Committee approved approximately $9,000 to carefully take
apart the old boiler in case we did decide to pursue that. That did take place, and it’s currently in the ground
container on the Broad Street grounds. We asked what it would cost to do a new boiler and it was $20,000 if we
start from scratch. I think that was the last piece of information you were asking for at our last meeting.
Alderman McCarthy
So going forward with this boiler will save us $11,000.
Mr. Smith
Broad Street is at the top of my list for potential projects next summer, to covert to hot water and replace that boiler
anyway. We would also be looking at replacing the roof membrane and greatly improve the control systems there.
But this boiler I think has a lot of life left in it. I think it makes sense to me, and I’d like to see us proceed with it.
Mr. Ryder
I thought you were going to come up with a written report laying out these items and what the options were.
Mr. DuBois
Without the architect here tonight, it’s hard to answer those questions. You’re not only looking for cost savings, but
an energy audit. And we don’t provide that. But we can get together with Steve and prepare that for the next
meeting if that’s the committee’s wish.
Mr. Smith
We can wait another month if that’s the desire of the committee.
Alderman McCarthy
When they’re here we’ll have them discuss it with us. I thought we got something in writing from Steve in an email.
Didn’t that go to the whole committee?
Mr. Smith
I thought it did.
Mr. Mosher
I remember the email that email.
Mr. Mosher moved to adjourn. So voted at 6:20 p.m.
