Gerstenberg, City Manager Summary According to City Charter, each new council must elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tern at the organizational meeting held on the Monday following the Tuesday election. The following nomination process has been used in the past. However, the outcome seems to favor the loudest and fastest motion maker: 1. The incumbent mayor requests nominations. 2. Member states "I nominate ____ for the office of Mayor. 3. Another member must second the motion (without support, the motion dies). 4. A vote is taken. If there are at least four ( 4) yes votes, the nominee is elected. 5. If the motion is defeated, the process is repeated. It is suggested that the following nomination process be used: 1. The incumbent mayor requests nominations. 2. All members have opportunity to nominate someone for office. Nominations do not require a second. 3. When all eligible names have been provided, nominations are closed. 4. Members vote by ballot, ranking their choices in order of preference. 5. Votes cast will be read aloud. The member with the highest total will be appointed Mayor.
