STAFF REPORT
Deputy Director Houghton informed the committee about upcoming special events scheduled for
the spring. On March 25, 2021, Car Bingo will take place at the Joslyn Senior Center and the
$5.00 admission includes a pack of 10 games, 1 dauber, and light refreshments. From March 1-
26, 2021, the Eggstravagant Egg Decorating will be open to the public and submissions of Easter
egg drawings will be displayed in the City Hall Lobby Art Gallery. In addition to the display,
there will also be an Egg Guessing Game placed in the lobby that participants can guess using
the provided QR code or with paper and pen. From March 19 – April 5, 2021 the Spring Egg
Scramble will be open for participants to hunt for the large Easter egg cut out placed on the lawn
at each Alhambra park and on the cut out will be a game piece that the participant can put it into
the egg scramble game to decode a hidden message. Every submission will receive an Easter
basket prize.
Deputy Director Houghton informed the committee there are two vacancies in the 2021
Alhambra City Hall Lobby Art Gallery calendar- August and October. She then asked if the
committee knew any artists that would be interested in exhibiting either this year or the next.
President Brian Canseco-Chan replied that he has an friend in mind that would be interested in
exhibiting in the Alhambra City Hall Lobby for October 2021 and that he would contact him
after the meeting to discuss further.
At this time, the Tournament of Roses and City of Pasadena are in the process of arranging plans
and protocols for their 2022 parade. Director Michael Macias informed the committee that the
City of Alhambra plans to participate in the 2022 parade and will use the 2021 chosen art contest
winner and float design since the theme “Believe, Dream, Achieve” from their cancelled 2021
parade has been reissued.
PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
None.
COMMITTEE COMMUNICATION
Committee member Sanchez inquired if any developments had occurred during the past month
with the Raising Cane’s art project. Deputy Director Houghton replied that their Art in Public
Places application was disqualified due to their art (two arrow shaped drive-through entrance and
exit signs) not meeting requirements.
President Canseco Chan would like to establish an art alley behind the businesses on Main Street
with murals painted by local artists and art pieces suspended above the walkways. Committee
member Sanchez supports the idea and mentioned that she has enjoyed a similar display of
public art in the City of Riverside where umbrellas hung above the walkways in an artistic
fashion. She shared an idea of distributing tiles to the community that could be hand painted and
then arranged into a large collage by artists as a possible public art installation in the proposed
art alley.
On the motion of President Canseco-Chan and with a second by Sanchez, the Art Alley Project
will be on the April 2021 City Arts and Cultural Events Committee agenda.
ADJOURNMENT
Zeller moved to adjourn the March 17, 2021 City Arts and Cultural Events Committee Meeting.
Seconded by Vice President Sanchez, the meeting was adjourned at 7:31 P.M.
