Unofficial until adopted by the September 20, 2023 City Arts and Cultural Events Commission Action Item III APPROVE MINUTES ALHAMBRA CITY ARTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS COMMISSION Wednesday, August 16, 2023 7:00 P.M. The regular meeting of the City Arts and Cultural Events Commission was called to order at 7:05 P.M. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Alhambra City Hall, 111 South First Street Alhambra, Conference Room “A”. ROLL CALL Commission Members Present: Vice President Saunders, Commission Member Hermano, and Commission Member Massaro. Commission Members Absent: President Canseco and Commission Member Longoria. Also attending: Director Macias, Deputy Director Brie Houghton, Recreation Supervisor Amanda Leonard and Clerical Assistant II Kelsey Rivadeneyra. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JUNE 21, 2023 REGULAR C.A.C.E. MEETING With a motion from Commission Member Hermano and a second by Commission Member Massaro, the minutes from the July 19, 2023 regular meeting were approved. ALHAMBRA DISTRICT ART PROJECTS The Alhambra City Arts and Cultural Events Commission are researching locations and types of art for their proposed Alhambra District Art projects. Vice President Saunders received perimeters of Granada Park from Director Macias and plans to meet with a muralist to discuss a quote for a large mural at Granada Park’s gymnasium. STAFF REPORT Recreation Supervisor Leonard shared details for upcoming community fall events - Fiesta Alhambra on September 17, 2023, Autumn Fest on October 7, 2023, and the 10th annual Alhambra Pumpkin Run on October 29, 2023. Deputy Director Houghton announced CSC will attend the next City Arts and Cultural Events Commission meeting in September and present their public art feature proposal. Director Macias encouraged the City Arts and Cultural Events Commission to connect with the Rotary Club as they are looking for artists to collaborate on a book sculpture at the Alhambra Civic Center Library. The Alhambra City Arts and Cultural Events Commission approved Mr. and Mrs. Chen to exhibit their paintings in the Alhambra City Hall Lobby Art Gallery for 2024. PUBLIC COMMUNICATION Lilia “Liliflor” Ramirez from Liliflor Art and Mujeres de Maiz introduced herself to the City Arts and Cultural Events Commission and shared her extensive work experience with the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles School District in public art programming and development along with curation, utility box art, murals, workshops, lectures and indigenous art modalities. Liliflor is a cultural art educator championing youth in the arts, using art as a tool for education, cultural awareness, civic engagement, healing and transformation that is interested in cocreating with the City of Alhambra. COMMITTEE COMMUNICATION Commission Member Massaro asked if the Alhambra District Art project funds have a timeframe and Deputy Director Houghton explained that there is no timeframe as the amount was an allotment and detailed the procedure of approval with the Alhambra City Council. Commission Member Hermano asked if any updates have occurred with the Burke Heritage Renovation Project and Director Macias explained that currently the City will do an overlay and include a small playground after the water capture project is completed. ADJOURNMENT With a motion by Vice President Saunders and second by Commission Member Massaro, the August 16, 2023 City Arts and Cultural Events Commission meeting was adjourned at 7:24 P.M.
