Trustees of War Memorials Meeting Minutes
Day, Date and Time: Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 6pm
Place of Meeting: City Hall Auditorium, 62 Friend St.

1. Call to Order/ Roll Call – 6:01pm
Present: Mayor Kassandra Gove, Ski Iworsky, Paul Jancewicz, James DeMars, Paul Cote, Tom
Champion
• Mayor Gove welcomed new Trustee Paul Cote.
2. Approval of Minutes- October 6, 2022
• Motion to approve minutes by Tom Champion
• Second from Ski Iworsky
• Unanimous approval
3. Public Comment
• Jeremiah Murphy, Veterans Services discussed his previous requests for names to be
added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at William B. Justin Memorial Park. The two
names are as follows: Daniel Sable and Brian Abram. Veterans Services has vetted their
eligibility for service and residency.
• Mr. Murphy also pointed out that 3 out of the 4 sides of the memorial are intact but one
side needs repair. 20 plates on that side are discolored due to water damage, and the
monument needs to be secured.
4. Financials- No change from October 6, 2022 meeting.
• The Trustees reviewed the balances of 2 accounts.
o Trust Fund (principal $3,000 with $14,100.03 interest)- Current Balance:
$17,100.03. This fund is to be used for the care of the Soldiers’ Memorials (WWII,
Korea and Vietnam) that were moved to Justin Park.
o RESTOR: Current Balance: $17,115.15- This Fund is to be used for the care and
restoration of all City War Memorials.
o Ski Iworsky discussed the history of the funding.
5. Vietnam Veterans Memorial addition of names
• Mr. Murphy will obtain costs to add the 2 names. Lou Bartlett has agreed to work with Mr.
Murphy on repairing the Justin Park Memorial and adding names. These costs will be
presented at the next meeting along with a request for reimbursement.
6. Franco-American Veterans Memorial restoration
• Lou Bartley from Challenge Engineering presented the following options to restore the
pole: Painting; Hinging, or Fiberglass pole.
o Recommended option- maintenance free and cost effective.
• The pole is 24 feet tall.
• The nearby tree would need to be pruned.
• New flag would be installed (will be placed the same direction).
• Mr. Bartley to present cost estimate to Trustees at next meeting.
• Work can be done in the spring.
• Motion to authorize the restoration of the flagpole with fiberglass by Paul Cote
• Second from Ski Iworsky
• Unanimous approval
• Discussion ensued about solar lights at the flagpole. Mr. Bartley agreed to look into this.
7. American Legion disbanding
• Ski Iworsky had no update at this time.
8. New Business
• Ski Iworsky inquired with Lou Bartley about the following items:
o Rusting cannon at Mt. Prospect. Mr. Bartley replied that DJ at Legacy Machine is
looking into that.
o The wheels on the cannons. Mr. Bartley says that granite slabs could be moved
behind it onto the pad. He also discussed mounting the plaque to the slabs. This is
to be discussed at the next meeting.
• Paul Cote asked how many veterans are in Amesbury. Mr. Murphy replied that the Clerk
will pull this out of the annual street listing census data.
• Paul Cote inquired about who organizes annual events: Ski Iworsky replied that Memorial
Day is organized by the VFW, Veterans Day-the American Legion, COA/Veterans
Services do an annual breakfast on Veterans Day.
9. The next meeting date was set for April 6, 2023 at 6pm, City Hall.
10. Motion to Adjourn by Paul Cote, Second from Tom Champion
11. Meeting Adjourned at 6:32pm.
