ANACONDA-DEER LODGE COUNTY BOARD OF PUBLIC HEALTH MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 11, 2017. Anaconda Community Center, 3rd Floor Conference Room Present: John Drastal (via Skype), Janie Dierenfeldt (BOH Chairperson), Audrey Mattson, Karen Solberg (ADLC Sanitarian), Kitty Basirico (ADLC-PHD Director), and Mark Softich, James Whealon (ADLC Commissioner), Mandy Boyer (Director Anaconda Head Start), Kate Coward (Director Smelter City Senior Center) Excused: Cindy Reed (Health Officer) Absent: none Guests: Kathy Swanson (Montana Representative HD 67), Margaret Osika, Judy Barber. I. Call to Order – Janie Dierenfeldt called the meeting to order at 4:34 PM II. March 9, 2017 minutes – Jim W. motioned to approve the minutes with corrections, Mar S. seconded and the motion passed with all in favor. No public comment. III. Janie D. introduced Montana Representative Kathy Swanson who gave an overview of House and Senate bills that had relevance to public health issues. Discussion was held on each bill. Please see attached summary provided by Representative Swanson. IV. DEPARTMENT REPORTS A. Environmental Health Department – Question was asked regarding the number of septic permits and where they were in the county. An update was asked for regarding some new businesses in town which Karen provided. B. School Update – Heidi Nielsen was not present but provided an email report. Kitty B. read the report: “I'm happy to report that we've completed our school-based health screenings/services for the 2016-17 school year. Puberty education (5th grade) and spring immunizations were both successful in April; and spring Heights & Weights for grades K-6th were completed last week. There have not been any significant health concerns among students. The lice outbreak of December-February seems to be under wraps - and apart from an occasional case of nausea, fever, or pink eye - there really isn't much to report on by way of health concerns. For the rest of May, I will be reviewing all of the immunization records for the Seniors and updating immunization records for incoming 7th graders.” No public comment C. Public Health Department – Report given. Brief recap was given regarding the ASIST training held May 1 &2. There will be an additional training scheduled for some time in the fall. No public comment. D. County/Commission – Jim Whealon gave a brief overview of the LEPC issue. County Administration is working on the issue. No public comment E. Superfund Update – Jim W. provided information regarding the Superfund Committee which will be composed of three community members and one appointed County Commissioner. Aspects the Commission is discussing include: how to adhere to the judge’s order regarding information sharing, how can a committee who doesn’t have information interface with the public, etc. Jim W. said Commission may vote at their next meeting. F. Code Enforcement Officer – no report due to medical leave of Code Enforcement Officer. V. Old Business: - BOH Vacancies – one ex-officio – Dr. Eric Zuniga (Veterinarian) no new information. - LEPC – County Administration is working on the issue. - Smelter City (Metcalf) Senior Center update regarding transportation: some key challenges are the related to decreased funding (15% cut Federal / State), increases in Workmen’s Compensation, increased insurance costs, etc. Public comment: are their grants available to look at building infrastructure, wiring, plumbing, fridge cooler? - Future presentations- John Semple, ADLC mosquito spraying will be presenting at the June 8th meeting. No public comment. - BOH Strategic Planning bylaws update – Please bring your suggestions and comments on the latest version of the By-Laws to the July meeting. No public comment. VI. New Business: no new business VII. Miscellaneous/Announcements, including educational offerings; Audrey Mattson mentioned two educational opportunities: 1) workshop on child and family wellness which will be held in Wisconsin; 2) AARP “Life Reimagined Courses”. These are free courses provided by AARP. Go to their website for additional information. No public comment. Karen S. mentioned the Adopt a Lot initiative and that there was still time to sign up. VIII. Public Comment: nothing additional IX. John D. motioned to adjourn the meeting at 5:43 PM, Audrey M. seconded the motion and the motion passed with all in favor.
