Historic Resources Board Meeting Minutes Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 10:00 AM Community Service Center, 118 E. 7th, 3rd Floor Conference Room 1. Call to Order (10:01 AM) by Vice-Chair Terry LaValley Members present: Terry LaValley, Lynette Foulger, Rose Nyman, and Tammy Mattson. Members absent: Chair Bob Wren (excused) Staff: Gayla Hess, Carl Hamming Public: None 2. Previous Meeting Minutes Rose Nyman moved to approve the minutes of December 7, 2023. Lynette Foulger seconded. Motion carried 4-0. Public Comment: None. Documents: 23-12-07 HRB MINUTES_DRAFT.PDF 3. Unfinished Business 3.I. Speaker Series (5.1.7) Continued planning for speaker series events, including: • January event and tasks, including: o Greeter (Lynette and Dean) o Introduction (Terry) o Thank you note (Lynette) o Handout (Sam per Rose) o Distribute posters (all) o Cookies (Lynette per schedule) Additionally, the group recapped that Rose will bring coffee (library has coffee pots), table cloth, sweetener, plates and napkins. Lynette will bring cups and sugar. Tammy will bring creamer. Terry will place the sandwich board sign on the corner. Rose asked about blocking off the stairs with a gate like how access was blocked to the second floor in the past. She did ask if this would impede access, but Sam assured her that this could be possible. Group spoke in favor of using the elevator for access. • February ad; https://www.adlc.us/DocumentCenter/View/4006/Doc1 Rose asked the group for approval with the caveat that additional names could be added if more speakers join the presentation or if Mr. Walker Williams requests the sisters’ names be listed. Lynette Foulger moved to approve the ad with potential name additions. Tammy Mattson seconded. Motion passed 4-0. Williams March 14 Anaconda’s Labor Unions John Forkan April 11 Remembering the Community of Mill Creek Marty Billquist May 9 Betting at Daly’s racetrack Sharon Wren June 13 Wildlife in community Kirstie Yeager September 12 People of the Big Hole Valley Mary Lynn McKenna October 10 Tracing the history of the Gold Coin Mine John Fitzpatrick November 14 Holiday Traditions- Thanksgiving & Christmas events Terry updated the group that June speaker will be the representative for our region and asked about the focus of the topic. Rose and Tammy suggested keeping it simple – perhaps include information about the petting zoo. • Letter to the Editor soliciting photos, snapshots, family stories, etc. from the public regarding the ACM/County Christmas Tree at City/Kennedy Common. Rose asked to submit a letter for additional information from the community for the presentation. Tammy spoke in favor of the idea. Tammy Mattson made a motion to allow Rose Nyman to write a letter to the editor soliciting information from the public about the ACM/County Christmas tree. Lynette Foulger seconded, and the motion passed 4-0. Public Comment: None 3.II. HRB 2023 Work Plan (3.6) Work plan updates Lynnette shared about grant programs available for housing rehabilitation funding (2.6.2); handouts attached. Rose found it to be good information. Terry mentioned Headwaters RC&D as an additional resource. Gayla updated the group that Mary is working on the inventories related to task 1.1.1, documents will discuss eligibility but will not be full narratives, and that these will be available in March. Rose asked if permission from owners was required, and Gayla said that it is not for inventory documentation but would be if a NR listing is pursued. 4. New Business 4.I. Oral History Interviews HRB Minutes, 01/04/2024 2/3  Rose was contacted by a resident for help to start oral history interviews with the suggestion to start with Larry Sladich. Rose spoke of the availability of audio interview files through the Montana History Portal and also a Smithsonian Oral History Guide. Rose wanted to gage the group’s interested and noted that this could take a lot of time. Terry would be excited for a project like this and suggested that the local NPR station could be a resource. Carl mentioned a similar project completed by KBMF. Tammy said that it would be interesting to hear personal stories and suggested that these could be released as a monthly podcast. Rose Nyman moved to pursue oral history interviews in podcast form and to approach Larry Sladich as an initial participant. Lynette Foulger seconded. Motion carried 4-0. Public Comment: None. 4.II. Interpretive Marker at Anaconda Rest Area MDT has space for an interpretive marker that could feature Anaconda history. Sign dimensions would be 24" by 36" (includes a 1" border) and the sign would be maintained by MDT. Gayla informed the group that MDT had reached out about replacing an existing sign at the rest area and asked if the group would be interested in helping design the sign. Rose and Tammy spoke in support of the project. Tammy suggested that the sign should draw visitors into Anaconda. Terry asked specifics about which sign and where it is located and about cost. Gayla said that she would bring additional information to the group and that MDT would make and maintain the sign. Rose Nyman moved to have HPO pursue topic of interpretive marker. Seconded by Tammy Mattson. Motion passed 4-0. Public Comment: None. 5. Miscellaneous/Announcements a. Board: Terry LaValley asked if there was an update on the BA&P building. Rose was unaware of any updates. b. Public: None. 6. Public Comment- This is the time for the public to comment on items NOT appearing on the agenda that fall within the board’s jurisdiction. None. 7.
