Music led Jamall to his current career of youth advocacy and empowerment. He has been making music for over 25 years and performed in 15 countries. Jamall wanted to share his love for Hip Hop with the young people in his community, which led to being Music Coordinator at the Neutral Zone teen center, a Special Needs Paraprofessional in Ann Arbor Public Schools, and now his current role with Washtenaw My Brother's Keeper. Jamall is the Project Specialist for Washtenaw County My Brother's Keeper, which is a nonprofit organization started by President Barack Obama in 2014. The initiative is focused on cradle to career pathways for Black and Brown boys and men of all ages, working to help counter some of the barriers they face. Whether it be inequities in the criminal justice system, the education system, or economically. * Marianetta Porter, University of Michigan Emeritus Professor - Marianetta is a mixed media artist revolving around African American history, culture and identity and works with different materials. She retired and is current an emeritus Professor at the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan Marianetta is very excited to work with the commission and is passionate about art and is interested in learning more about art in public spaces throughout the CIty. Presented Present: 9- John Kotarski, David Esau, Allison Buck, Peggy Wier-Leonard, Sophie Grillet, Sarah Fuller, Wasentha Young, Marianetta Porter, and Jamall Bufford Absent: 2- Venita Harrison, and Travis Radina APPROVAL OF AGENDA Approved City of Ann Arbor Page 2 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final August 4, 2021 PUBLIC COMMENT Ypsilanti Arts Commission; * Jennifer Goulet, Chair of the Ypsilanti Arts Commission Jennifer wishes this introduction to be the start of an ongoing and collaborative effort between the Ypsilanti Arts Commission and the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission. AAPAC Chair Allison Buck will join the August 19 Ypsilanti Arts Commission meeting. Approved City of Ann Arbor Page 3 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final August 4, 2021 REPORT FROM STAFF *Pickle Street Mural Project - This project has been withdrawn. *WWTP Stairwell Project on Schedule - Moving forward and on schedule. Selected Commissioner to participate on the committee. Funded from the CIP and a portion was carved out to fund this project. *AAACF Funds are now available for use. *BLM and Street Mural Projects- Councilmember Radina will share an update at our next meeting. Presented City of Ann Arbor Page 4 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final August 4, 2021 REPORT FROM COMMITTEES Business Owners + Developers Work Group- Inspires public art and a member of this group serves on the Design Review Board, which only meets when there are projects. Capital Improvement Project Working Group - CIP comes out typically in mid December every year and we try to get a plan together in the last couple weeks of the year and early January. Communications Work Group - We haven't met recently, been holding off to focus our attention on using the funds from the Ann Arbor Area Community foundation for advertisements, announcements, etc. Fundraising Work Group - Desire for the Commission to do more advocacy work. Leadership Forum Work Group - Concept to have Community members participate within this leadership forum to act as liaisons within the Community to talk about supporting public art and gauge interest of community members. Nominations/Leadership Review Work Group - Desire to nominate more people to become members of the Commission. Policy & Governance Work Group - Desire for more permanent art installations within the City Special Projects Work Group - Revival of the Golden Paintbrush award. For people who made a special contribution to public art and admirable contribution. Worked with City staff and ITdepartment putting together a digital packet of our nominations, which have been sent out to our judges. Nominations are ready to go. More information at our October meeting. Waiting on more information re new City flag design and the Allen Creek Berm project, location is held and still seeking funding to make this happen. Most Commissioners are busy and needing support on multiple groups; is there a need for the commission to be larger? Can be done with a required change in the bylaws. City of Ann Arbor Page 5 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final August 4, 2021 Youth Outreach Work Group - Great way to engage youth participation within the Commission. Bringing back the idea of the non voting youth members could also have the Nominations and Leadership working groups added.
