Black Lives Matter Mural - Staff continues to work with John Fournier, Assistant City Administrator to finalize this prior to 2022 Juneteenth celebration. Councilmember Song will follow up to obtain additional input and details. Contact with AADL as an additional resource may help to move this project underway. Location to be determined. City of Ann Arbor Page 1 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 2, 2022 NEW BUSINESS No New Business REPORT FROM STAFF WTP Stairwell Mural Project - Final (4) muralist have submitted their work and meeting set to decide on the final project. Discussion continues on preparation of the wall and materials needed to prep wall for a flat surface. City Flag Redesign - Councilmember Song will reach out to Interim City Administrator, Milton Dohoney for more details and input in moving this project forward. Commission to move this project to the Outreach Working Group. Commissioner Appointments - Commissioners Grillett and Leonard have submitted reappoint applications to continue for an additional term. Commissioner Esau will resign and new applicants are being considered by the AAPAC leadership team. Public Engagement Opportunities - Looking for ways to participate in city programs and decision-making? Attached are the Policy Agenda Committee updates adopted for FY 2022. ARPA Funding - Councilmember Song discussed the upcoming ARPA Funding and the need to have a grant program to assist local artists impacted by the pandemic. Awarding 10k to artists for an artistic endeavor that would be displayed in the CIty of Ann Arbor. Awarded payments may require a third party administrator. Approved as presented City of Ann Arbor Page 2 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 2, 2022 REPORT FROM COMMITTEES CIP Work Group - Commissioner Esau Presented an update on two reports one for projects that was previously approved by council where some did not happen; another assigned to the DDA or Housing Commission did move forward, with for art enhancements made. Annual report has new projects for enhancement. 1) Fire Station #5 for replacement - UM North Campus station where a station is planned will include tennis and basketball court renovations where mural projects could be placed. 2) Downtown Alley Improvement - Not sure of the details but could mirror A2AC Alley Murals 3) Briarwood Mall ponds is a stormwater project. Prior recommendations approved at the March 2021 meeting were sent to Council but no minute’s show these were approved, and staff not advised as to a final approval. Staff will resubmit to City Council for their approval. Recommendation and approval from the Commission to move forward. Outreach Work Group - Commissioner Grillet (Presentation) *Raise awareness of commissioners’ work *Stimulate discussion of art in Ann Arbor *Facilitate public art making by all including the youth *Inspire solicit ideas and project from individuals, businesses, and organizations *Encourage and normalize ownership and buy-in from the public. Encourage all to attend the Penney Stamps Lecture Series. Outreach and Public Engagement through Public Art Presentation - Commissioner Porter (Presentation) Monument Lab is coming to Ann Arbor on March 17th and sponsored by Michigan Theatre. Monument lab is a nonprofit public art and history studio based in Philadelphia and they've been working with artists and curators and activists and educators and civic organizations. We need to rethink the ways in which we think about monuments and public art. Ideas discussed in terms of what could we do as we already have like Festivals Fools and they're things that happened already in Ann Arbor, are there ways that we might expand our art? Also, think about art, that is not just something that you stand back and look at, but are there ways that we might think about public engagement with the art that we have or think about other projects that could happen like pop ups that would engage City of Ann Arbor Page 3 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 2, 2022 the public in. Ways to implement - *Survey the Community *Co-Opt Volunteers - A collaboration with this special project group and the outreach group together *Engage with Youth - For the month of March teachers are going to present lessons on the murals on Ann Arbor and then we're going to have a mural designing contest. Future partnership with Partner with A2AC *Pop-up Events - Activate Leadership Forum -Public webinar conversations, Instagram feed on AAPAC and City Flag liaise with Special Projects. Commissioner Bufford discussed a youth alliance program. They received funding to display art in the A2 Courthouse for resistance art for families impacted by the justice system. Planned for September and will include art pieces for a few weeks as well as live video, audio pieces and possible performance art. Still in the early stages. Stay tuned for more information. Jamall is also involved in a Community High School documentary "Formula 734" formally Jones School which was predominately African America school up until 1965. Upcoming documentary "Formula 734" will include music from Jamall. Shares a history of Ann Arbor and the surrounding African American community. Seeking resources to screen this film. Councilmember Song shared information on My Parking Day 2022 (September 16th) is a day where people across the world temporarily repurpose street parking spaces and convert them to tiny parks and places for art, play, and activism. Lisa Sauve of the Planning Commission is our contact and could partner with the commission on an art space initiative for this event. Councilmember Song will contact Lisa for availability to attend an upcoming AAPAC meeting. Communications Work Group - Chair Fuller *Add another round for Golden Paintbrush Award *AAPAC Website update with regular updates and postings on events, etc. *Themes for education, projects, and call to action to engage the community *Survey to Ann Arbor Community on where residents would like to see City of Ann Arbor Page 4 Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 2, 2022 more art *More art funding opportunities; upcoming ARPA fund *Use of Ann Arbor Community Foundation funds promote the WTP mural opening, artists performance, etc. November 11 reveal is planned. *UM collection is well already very well mapped; perhaps we share links to UM art *Social Media calendar; stay in touch and share art news with City Communication unit to share with residents Councilmember Song is aware that Mr. Dohoney is interested in revamping the City web. AAPAC previously had a Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter - all were removed. Boundaries on what Communications team will accept from the commission. Councilmember Song - the Ann Arbor District Library could help promote via the Library Summer Games as another option. ADJOURN All persons are encouraged to participate in public meetings.
