Ceremonial Items ID-342-14 City Council Citation Honoring John T. Chambers, Jr. Mayor Pantelides on behalf of the citizens of the City of Annapolis, presented to Former Alderwoman Classie G. Hoyle representing the family of John Thomas Chambers, Jr., this CITY COUNCIL CITATION in recognition of Mayor Chambers’ dedication and commitment to the citizens of Annapolis, both as an Alderman and as the First African American Mayor of Annapolis. Mayor Chambers began serving our citizens in 1967 when he became the Ward 7 Alderman, but after the City expanded to eight wards, Ward 3 elected him to represent Parole and other neighborhoods on the west side of the City. As Alderman, he introduced legislation for the Mayor to be a full-time position, worked to establish rent control, advocated for making Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a State and City holiday, and placed a plaque at the foot of Main Street honoring Alex Haley’s ancestor, Kunta Kinte. Following the unfortunate death of Mayor Gustav Akerland, the Annapolis City Council unanimously appointed Mr. John T. Chambers, Jr. as Mayor, a position he held from April 12 to June 7, 1981 thereby becoming Annapolis’ first African-American Mayor. Mayor Chambers continued to devote his time and talents City of Annapolis Page 2 City Council Special Minutes - Final October 27, 2014 to his community and shouldered the burden of the office during a period of severe turmoil. We honor his memory tonight and continue to show our eternal gratitude for his contributions to our City. As a student intern for St. Johns College, we applaud your input as the Commission continues to document area artists and their special stories that make up our history.
