Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley Remarks City Council Meeting · Thank you everyone for being here tonight. · I’d first like to recognize the people who have been running the warming center at the Stanton Center. It was open 12 days in January and so far it’s been open 6 days in February. Deputy Chief Kevin Simmons coordinates this effort out of our Office of Emergency Management and Nicole Queen, also out of OEM has been critical in making sure there is adequate food and resources for the people who need to come in from the cold. On the ground at the Stanton Center, I’d like to recognize Charles Tucker and William Haskins of We Care & Friends. These guys run the operation and stay overnight. In our City, it is important that we take care of one another. · As we observe Black History Month this year, I’d like to mention an upcoming event we’re hosting and give a shout out to a couple of great events that have already taken place. o Coming up February 23, the City will be hosting a Black History Celebration at the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center. It’s 2 to 8 PM. It’s family friendly and will include art, dance, food, music and storytelling. Please come by. o Last week, I was honored to attend “Remembrance, Reconciliation City of Annapolis Page 2 Printed on 3/18/2019 City Council Regular Minutes - Final February 11, 2019 and Healing,” a film screening and panel discussion at Maryland Hall. The panel discussion was especially enlightening because of the diversity of the panel and the openness with which the audience and panel broached difficult subjects around racial reconciliation. Thank you to organizers and panelists and Maryland Hall for hosting. It’s a great way to use the venue for these important discussions. o Over the weekend, Banneker Douglass House hosted a birthday to honor Frederick Douglass. o Even as we honor Frederick Douglass and talk about other great African Americans who have contributed so much to American society, I want to say the names of black Annapolitans who were key to establishing roots and building the City we know today. I gave them a tour and talked about the ways we are working to Keep Annapolis Beautiful. City of Annapolis Page 3 Printed on 3/18/2019 City Council Regular Minutes - Final February 11, 2019 · Also last week, I visited 1750 Forest Drive, this is the old MAIF building, which had been vacant for two years. It’s been renovated to be shared office space with state-of-the-art amenities to attract the kinds of business that will keep and attract a high-tech workforce. One of the highlights of this visit was learning that $400,000 in tax revenue would come online once the building is at capacity. This is huge because previously, MAIF did not pay taxes, and we didn’t collect anything on the vacant building. But aside from the taxes, at capacity, the building will provide jobs to a little more than 400 workers. · The opioid epidemic has touched the lives of people from across our city. It has hit people rich and poor - and of all races. We are working to find solutions and deliver resources and community services to people in the throes of addiction. To that end, we have our third Naptown Anti-Dope Move Meant Community Engagement Session this Saturday, Feb. 16, from 11 AM to 3 PM. It’s taking place at the Eastport Community Center. The previous two events have been great for hearing stories and testimonials from people in recovery, and also in finding resources. · Finally, I would like to remind you all to look on the homepage of Annapolis.gov to see the Urban Land Institute, or ULI, report. It includes key recommendations on planning for City Dock. The report is 32 pages, which seems long and onerous, but it has a lot of pictures. Pictures of the City in summer. Reading this report can really take your mind off the wintery weather we’re having. Check out the report by following the link for “ULI Report” on our home page.
