Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley Remarks City Council Meeting Monday, February 25, 2019 City of Annapolis Page 2 City Council Special Minutes - Final February 25, 2019 · Thank you everyone for being here tonight. · Last Wednesday, we had a winter storm come through the City. I want to thank the residents for mostly keeping their cars off the Snow Emergency Routes. The City Manager opened the parking garages for residents to use for free. This was a good decision that helped our Public Works crews more easily maneuver and get the roads treated. I would like to especially thank Robert Couchenour, Phil Cook and Phil Scrivener. These are just some of the unsung heroes of these snow events. They plan, coordinate and oversee all snow operations. They ensure that the City has adequate resources, including personnel, contractors, vehicles, fuel, and salt and then they manage the work to keep the roads as clear as possible for both emergency vehicles and residents who need to be out and about. Thanks everyone! · I want to join City resident Donna Feather who posted a “Kudos to Public Works” message on our City Facebook page. This resident contacted Public Works the day after the storm to report a tree down and within a few hours the tree was removed and the issue resolved for the residents of Admiral Heights. The Public Works employees are Antonio Savage and Marvin Wallace. Thanks guys! We work for the residents of this City and I like knowing that our employees are being responsive in a timely manner. · This is our last City Council meeting before we close out Black History Month. We’ve had some great commemorative events this month. I’d like to recognize two members of my staff who organized and worked long hours to make these events successful. Thank you to Will Rowell and Tola Ajayi. There have been community discussions and events and a celebration of black history at Annapolis High School that was organized by young people. I invite you to like “One Annapolis” on Facebook where you can read some of the rich and sometimes painful history of the African American experience in the City of Annapolis. · In continuing our One Annapolis efforts and diversity outreach to the community, I had the honor to attend the Hispanic Business Leaders Breakfast last week. We got to listen to business men and women talk about doing business in the City. One of the biggest issues is navigating City processes. I was pleased to learn after the breakfast that some of the people followed up with my office to talk about new business opportunities being launched. One is a new magazine, another an effort to expand an existing business and the third an offer of volunteer help and/or City of Annapolis Page 3 City Council Special Minutes - Final February 25, 2019 donations for an upcoming event the City will be hosting at “Pip” Moyer Center in April. · Also with our Hispanic outreach liaison, we have a new After School program at the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center for students from Bates and Annapolis Middle Schools. The program is four days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3 to 6 PM and there will be transportation provided. · We also have 16 people enrolled in English and GED Classes and for this we are offering child care so the parents can get the program and don’t have to scramble or worry about finding someone to look after their children. With these programs, we are utilizing the great resource that is the “Pip” Moyer Center to fully engage the Hispanic Community. · I had dinner last week with the president of St. John’s College, Panayiotis Kanelos, and he announced that the college is reserving 50 scholarships for minority students. This is a great opportunity as a pipeline for Annapolis High School. St. John’s College is right here in Annapolis and we are trying to forge a closer relationship. It started with our mentorship day and these scholarships will help open college opportunities for our students, so I am very excited about that. · We had our third NAPTOWN Anti-Dope event at the Eastport Community Center on Feb. 16. The opioid epidemic has touched the lives of people from all across our city, and it was great to hear from public safety officials and people in recovery. It’s important for people of our City to know there are resources and there is hope. We will have our next event at the Stanton Center on March 30. · As I promised, I met with Del. Alice Cain, Councilwoman Lisa Rodvien and Superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools Dr. George Arlotto on the Adequate Public Facilities legislation that was held over from our last City Council meeting. Dr. Arlotto has let us know that there is no plan to expand the high school, no plan to redistrict and no plan to build another high school. · We received a copy of the Stanford University Woods Institute for the Environment study that focused on the issues of flooding and climate change and the economic impacts for both the City of Annapolis and the businesses here. A number of people from the City cooperated with the Stanford researchers. I want to thank David Mandell of the Office of Emergency Management, Lisa Greco in Public Works, and Rick City of Annapolis Page 4 City Council Special Minutes - Final February 25, 2019 Gordon and Markus Moore in Transportation. Also, from the Annapolis Police Department (who provided camera footage of the parking area on City Dock), Sgt. Ricky Truitt and Detective Mike Reid. I urge you to check out the study through the link on the homepage of the Annapolis.gov website. · Finally, this is the last meeting for City Attorney Richard Melnick. Rich is leaving us due to unexpected family health obligations that have arisen, and with his long commute and the amount of time he puts in, it was impossible to satisfy a balance. We will miss him, but understand how demanding the job can be. Thank you Rich, for your service to the Mayor’s office and staff, the City Council, City employees, but most importantly, the residents we all serve. Thank you Rich. Presented. D.
