Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley Remarks City Council Meeting Tuesday, April 29, 2019 · Thank you everyone for being with us. We have a full docket tonight and I don’t want to be here until the wee hours, so please know that I am going to “hold the gavel hard tonight!” · I’d like to thank the Finance Committee for all of their work since the budget dropped April 8. · The day after the last council meeting, I went to Toledo, Ohio, where I met with mayors from around the country, including mayors from cities City of Annapolis Page 2 City Council Standing Committee Minutes April 29, 2019 that have experienced mass shootings including Pittsburgh’s Bill Peduto and mayors from cities that experience everyday gun violence. It was a productive working meeting and we recommitted ourselves to making smart public policy to reduce and eliminate gun violence. · Yesterday, Baltimore City experienced a mass shooting. There were eight shot. Another one on our doorstep saddens me. There was only one fatality, and I’d like to take a moment for all of us to think about that person. · The City Dock Action Team has an upcoming meeting I’d like to announce: May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Pip Moyer Recreation Center. The City Dock Action Team and Working Groups have been researching implementation strategies for the Urban Land Institute TAP study. We encourage residents of all wards to be a part of this meeting. · We have the next Naptown Antidope Movemeant Meeting on Saturday, May 4 at Pip Moyer. 11 to 3. · I want to thank the Drum and Bugle Corps for working with the City to put on the Martin Luther King Jr. parade on April 13. · The Wounded Warriors had their annual bike ride through Annapolis on April 17. I got to ride through the Naval Academy with these brave men and women. The ride is a great way to raise awareness for the sacrifices military personnel make in order to serve our country. It was an honor to be invited and to ride with them. · Speaking of bike rides, coming up May 11, there will be another group coming through the City. This one is to support the National Law Enforcement Memorial. We’ll be meeting and greeting those riders around 4 p.m. on the 11th near Stan and Joes on West Street. Please come out to cheer them on. · With the greening of the trees, we are thinking about the environment. · Members of my staff joined Annapolis Green, the Severn River Association, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Back Creek Conservancy and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County to do a headwaters cleanup of Back Creek on April 20. · A couple days later, we held a press event with Sen. Cardin, Congressman Sarbanes and County Executive Pittman to reaffirm our City of Annapolis Page 3 City Council Standing Committee Minutes April 29, 2019 commitment to the environment for Earth Day. · This past weekend, 300-plus volunteers from around the City worked on 60 projects for the 28th annual GreenScape. I got to participate in a project in my own neighborhood at the park on Lafayette in Murray Hill. Thank you to everyone who is working to keep our City beautiful! · Speaking of environmental action. You’ve got information in the budget on some of my reorganization priorities. I am hopeful that we can work together on this. We all want to get to the same place. · Last thing: May 4 is International Firefighter’s Day. Make sure on Saturday you hug a firefighter. Thank you. This was presented. D.
