Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley Council Remarks 9 March 2020 – 7 p.m. City Council Chambers Good evening! We had an amazing St. Patrick’s Parade yesterday, with nearly 100 entries, lots of bands and Irish dancers, and floats and local businesses. The parade route from West Street all the way down to City Dock was jam packed with people. Families. I want to thank the organizers for everything being so well put together and thought out. I want to thank our parade marshals for keeping the event on track. I want to thank our police and public safety team for keeping everyone safe and secure, and I want to thank our Department of Public Works for cleaning everything up and having our City spiffy and sparkling like a beautiful emerald this morning. == One of the most pressing issues facing our community -- and the country -- right now is the public unease and the response to the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. I want you to know that we have the best team in place. We have been preparing for weeks, before this was even in the news. The city has a great Office of Emergency Management and they have been working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our residents. First, we have activated a Joint Incident Command, which is a fancy way of saying that we are working with county and state partners to ensure that communications are coordinated to easily disseminate official, timely, accurate, consistent and easy-to-understand messaging. The City shares a health officer and health department with the county and they are directing the information that we are sharing. Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman (KALY – ana – raman) and the county health department are here for Annapolis city residents. Dr. K has asked us to share some of that information with you. COVID-19 is a virus. There is no vaccine. Just like with the flu virus, antibiotics are ineffective. So, the key is prevention. That starts with practicing good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. You can use the “vampire” method. Avoid touching your face. If you are sick, stay home. If you have questions, please call your physician. You can also call the health department or AskAAMC. Those numbers are up on the screen. Know that we have plans in place to get information out to the public. If you’d like to get information quickly, sign up for the Office of Emergency Management’s “PrepareMe” app for Apple or android. Remember to also check official web and social media pages for information about purported closures or event cancelations. To illustrate how we are furthering those communications goals both online and in person, we worked Friday to do prevention outreach ahead of yesterday’s St. Patrick’s parade. OEM director Kevin Simmons had more than a dozen city employees canvass downtown businesses to help them prepare and keep patrons safe by distributing infection disease prevention materials. The unit replaced a 15-eyear old pumper. This one is specially designed for the City of Annapolis’ historic narrow streets. • At Annapolis Neck Fire Station, we placed Medic 48 into service. I wonder if we saw those at the parade yesterday? We had some shiny equipment out there. Chief Remaley also wanted me to recognize the 110th anniversary of the Line of Duty death of Annapolis Firefighter William H. Brown of Water Witch Hook and Ladder Company. Shortly after 7 p.m. on March 6, 1910, flames were discovered in a residence over the Kotzen Shoe Store at the corner of Market Space and Fleet Street. While assisting in handling a hose line on the roof of an outbuilding, Firefighter Brown fell, hitting his head. At the time, his injuries were thought to be minor, and he went home. Later that night, it was evident he had suffered a severe concussion, and he died at home as a result of his injuries. Firefighter Brown was over 60 years old at the time of his death. Last Friday, members of the Anne Arundel County and Annapolis Fire Departments, along with Alderwomen Eleanor Tierney, remembered Firefighter Brown at a gravesite memorial service and wreath-laying. == I want to remind everyone of the Annapolis Film Festival, which is coming to town March 26 through 29. There are 70 films that will be shown over four days. This is a wonderful showcase of our City, with films being shown at Maryland Hall, St. John’s College, Asbury United Methodist and Annapolis Elementary. Stay up to date at AnnapolisFilmFestival.com. Two others were injured. While this person wasn’t from Annapolis, we have so many cyclists who are out on the roadways. Please share the road and look out for cyclists who may be riding for pleasure, as this group was, or may be riding because that is the most environmentally-friendly transit mode or because it is economical. Let’s have a moment of silence for this person who is gone too soon. [moment] == This Saturday, I will present my first-ever Key to the City to NFL Coach and Annapolis son Bill Belichick who will be in town for a Navy vs. Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse game. As most of you know, Coach Belichick is the winningest ever NFL football coach, but he is also a product of Annapolis Public Schools. He is a proud panther from Annapolis High, where he played both football and lacrosse. Of course he is best known for his 225-75 record over 19 seasons as coach of the Patriots. He has a 30 and 10 record in the playoffs, leading the Pats to 16 division titles and six Super Bowls wins. He was also defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, during which time they won two Super Bowls. Coach Belichick’s father was a part of the Navy athletics team as a scout, coach and physical education instructor. Bill has returned often to Annapolis for Navy sports. He regularly visits his mother, who lives here. The tickets to the game on Saturday, March 14 at 12 noon are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
