Update from the Mayor Good morning! We will be settling in for a long meeting today. I want to first bring everyone’s attention to the tremendous city staff. They have weathered a pandemic this winter and spring and they have not missed a beat. Trash has been picked up. Fire and police and OEM have kept the public safe and not only helped individuals with covid get the medical care they need, with a couple of our firefighters even getting the virus. Our busses and public transit has run on time, getting essential workers to their jobs. In my office, the staff has coordinated and worked food drives, helped with school computer distribution and kept information coming to the public about closures, food drives, covid testing, and now the reopening process. Our office of economic development has helped hundreds and hundreds of businesses figure this all out. They are there for every step of the reopening process, helping deploy city resources to help these businesses survive. Our finance office has put in countless hours figuring out how to make the city continue to function with a sharp reduction in funding. Our public works have continued with filling potholes, sewer projects, sidewalk maintenance and other work. Our planning and zoning have continued to issue permits, conduct inspections and do their work to keep trades functioning throughout this time. We have an entirely professional workforce and they have held it together and I want to say as Mayor of the City of Annapolis, I am full of pride each day at their spirit, their perseverance and their grit. I thank you for all your hard work. Over the past week, Annapolis joined what has become worldwide protests, demonstrations and vigils in opposition of racism. In Annapolis, thousands have turned out. We saw it in a peaceful march yesterday from Navy stadium to City Dock. We saw it in the vigil last night. We saw it in daily demonstrations in our public spaces and even here in front of City Hall last week where Police Chief Edward Jackson came out to address the crowd. I have been a participant as have members of my family and my staff. We will have this difficult conversation in Annapolis. I thank the public for reminding us of our priorities, especially today as we embark on the next year’s budget.
