Update from the Mayor Mayor’s Remarks Annapolis City Council Meeting - Virtual 23 November 7 p.m. City of Annapolis Page 1 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final November 23, 2020 Good evening everyone. Thanksgiving is this Thursday and I want to remind everyone that a lot of people in our community are hurting. After nine long months, we are all exhausted by the economic toll this is taking on our business community and the social and mental toll it is taking on each of us as individuals. Please be kind to one another. There are vaccines in our future. The science is going to lead us out of this, and I hope that by next Thanksgiving, we’ll be having our usual holiday celebrations. This year though, we’re going to have to think through - very carefully - how we approach this holiday season. My wife and I are having a small family gathering. We aren’t going out of town, we don’t have anyone coming in from out of town. Our health department is urging people to do the same in order to keep our health system and our hospitals from filling up in the days leading to Christmas and New Years. I encourage you to do the same. == On Midnight Madness, the Mayor’s office, we have heard from people who say that the City is being irresponsible to hold any kind of midnight madness and we have heard from businesses saying how dare you cancel midnight madness. Because there is confusion, let me set the record straight. The city is responsible for permits for live music and street closures. We have pulled those permits. The county and health department set the guidelines for business capacity. Currently that is limited to 50 percent. Retailers and business associations are responsible for setting business hours. With guidance from the small business recovery task force, they have decided to carry forward with extended hours for the three Thursdays after Thanksgiving, that’s Dec. 3, 10 and 17. In addition, other retail stores may expand hours so that they can extend their capacity on other Fridays and Saturdays throughout December. The City of Annapolis is trying to help these businesses. There are limitson the number of people inside these stores for the sake of the public health. Extending hours allows them to stretch out – to expand their capacity. Have you seen the lights? During these next few weeks, I encourage you to shop downtown or shop online and do curbside pickup, drive through downtown, where our partner businesses and nonprofits are helping us to decorate and light up. It will be magical. Park and shop, grab carryout supper. Tip generously. We can bring these businesses to the other side of the pandemic, but we cannot do it alone. We need your help. Small businesses need your support. I also encourage you to join in the fun by “lighting up” your home, your business or your office. All of us together can bring a little bit of joy into this year that has been exceedingly City of Annapolis Page 2 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final November 23, 2020 difficult. That extra sparkle will be greatly appreciated. == I want to thank some folks who have helped our City to navigate the pandemic by showing up every single week for our Food Fridays. These volunteers come to Pip Moyer, they pack and sort food, they deliver it to the homes of what were 30 families pre-pandemic, but what has grown to 90 families each week. In fact, these volunteers were out over the weekend and today finding turkeys for those 90 families to deliver tomorrow. We presented them with citations last week, but I want to say their names. If you know them, give them a socially distanced nod the next time you see them. They are, as the wizard of oz called such people, “good deed doers.” They are: Linda Barbour, Judy Moore, Karen Scott, Donna Doyle, Jim Martin, Michael Green, Mike Flanagan, Willie T. Bullock , Simon Durland, Sarah Cahalan, Jeff Riedle, Robert Eades, In Memoriam and Karma O’Neill. I also want to thank the City staff who work to coordinate all of this. If you have the time or the means to give back to our community, please do. If you are in need, please reach out. There are resources in the City, through my office, through the county, the health department, social services, the county mental health agency, and others, including your own church or synagogue.
